A great egret looking for snacks in what is left of Mud Lake…the heatwave this summer has made it more of a Mud Puddle. Still, it managed to grab several minnows while I watched. Fuel for the inevitable flight south.

Morning stroll through Fletcher Wildlife Gardens. A catbird among some pretty magenta and green foliage and a juvenile goldfinch in decidedly not-flashy brown plumage. I actually haven’t seen one in this form before…you can just see the yellow colour peeking through around the face.

A couple little guys. A belted kingfisher, the Billy Idol of the bird world 🀘, and a song sparrow. The song sparrows seem to be the only birds that really want their photos taken. And I always seem to catch them with their mouths full. #nature #birds #photography #birding
Fishing shacks and some of their inhabitants in Naufrage, PEI. An amazing Barn Swallow colony there, using the old shacks for nesting. Netting protects the currently used buildings from being taken over. #photography #wildlife #nature
On a photo walk visiting interesting locations that are sometimes, as a resident in Ottawa, overlooked. One of these is Canal Lane, under the Plaza Bridge. #photography #blackandwhite #monochrome
Hog’s Back Falls in Ottawa after a thunderstorm. A lovely view in winter or summer. #photography #longexposure #landscape
A wood duck duckling giving a painted turtle a hard time as the turtle tries to emerge from the pond to get some rays 🌞. The turtle made it and Mr. Grumpy relocated.

A Cedar Waxwing taking a moment on a sumac tree. Such a gorgeous bird, always love to see them. πŸͺΆ

A female Northern Flicker surveys the area from her…dirt pile? Probably finding some snacks in there.

A Black-Crowned Night Heron with a sizeable catfish for (a rather early) supper! While still a lovely animal, I find it a bit awkward looking without the elongated neck of his/her relatives. #birds πŸͺΆ #photography #nature #fujifilm
Red-winged Blackbird (female) basking in the last of the afternoon sun. Fletcher Wildlife Garden, Ottawa.

The American Goldfinch has finally arrived. Still sporting some winter plumage with bright yellow suspenders. Helpfully eating a 🐞 from our tree!

Birds of our backyard. A Downy Woodpecker and a spritely White Breasted Nuthatch, pausing for photo ops. #birds #CanadianBirding πŸͺΆ
β€œTo the fowl whose fiery eyes now burned into my bosom’s core;” The Raven

Not a Raven, just an American Crow, but this guy was definitely evaluating me while I was looking for other, less judgemental, subjects. πŸ˜†

The Bank Street Canal Bridge in Ottawa. I wish I had brought my 100-400mm as there was a Great Blue Heron just standing motionless in the middle of the canal…at night…looking sorta creepy. πŸ˜…

Got a snap of this dapper dude at Mud Lake Conservation Area in Britannia. He was certainly the best dressed of the day. Trails are still icy, but the 🌞 was lovely.
