Author. Cultural critic. Trying to pay better attention.
The best Twin Peaks analysis you’ve never read won’t mention the director once. It will make you rewatch everything and see what was always there.

Something’s coming.

Watch this space Friday.

Are you a serious person, or not?

Do you take your life seriously, or is it a big joke you’re playing on the world?

The Super Bowl halftime show does not shape culture.

Stop feeding this stupid machine.

Watching sports makes people dumb enough to allow pedophiles to rob their government while they cheer about millionaires chasing balls around each other.

John Wick is a story about a ma who killed all the bad guys in the world because one of them killed his puppy.

There is no greater indictment of American morality than the fact that 70% of eligible voters didn’t vote against a massive pedophile cover up in government and business.

Life changes completely when you start rooting for the people around you instead of competing with and hating on them.

Bezos gutted The Washington Post this week. Three hundred journalists. The books section. Sports. International correspondents cut mid-warzone.
He didn’t even join the call.
Democracy doesn’t die in darkness. It dies when a billionaire decides journalism is less useful than a rocket contract.

AI didn’t kill creative work. It exposed how much of what we called “creative” was actually just rearranging furniture. The writers, designers, and artists who survive will be the ones who understand this distinction.

If #starfleetacademy creates new #startrek fans, the world will be a better place. A world filled with young people who watch their way backwards in time to #Voyager, and #StarTrek #TheNextGeneration will be a better world.

Wait until they find out how relevant #DeepSpace9 is today.

#TaylorSwift’s #Opalite video reminds me of them good old #MTV love story videos. 100% fun proof what populist storytelling looks like when an artist actually knows what they’re doing.

1985 or 2026, doesn’t matter. If you’re good, you’re good, and she is.

Mass market paperbacks were how my working-class family afforded books. But I grew up to buy hardbacks because they’re better to read.
The internet democratizes reading more effectively now, and sometimes the right way to honor an old format is to let it rest.

The last thing this world needs is another oral history about Twin Peaks. That story has been told more times than the Bible.

The new #MuppetShow is great because it’s the old Muppet Show.

Some formulas don’t need played with.

Watching my new 4K copy of Dogma. It’s been 25 years and the opening meeting between Loki and Bartleby would not make sense today because we don’t greet people getting off the airplane at their arrival terminals.

Cooper's mistake wasn't entering the Black Lodge. It was believing goodness could engage with evil without being transformed by it. Twin Peaks is about a man who learned too late that you can't save someone by making them the object of your investigation.

Critics who can't analyze art without referencing the creator have forgotten their job.
New Criticism builds on the work itself. Oral histories dismantle it for parts.
One respects what's on screen. The other worships who put it there.

The loudest voices screaming about AI destroying art are the same people who spent decades treating art like a product line. They’re not afraid of machines. They’re afraid someone will notice they’ve been operating like machines all along.

AI didn't kill creativity. It exposed how little of it most people were doing in the first place.

If an author’s ideas can’t put a dollar in your pocket or a song in your heart, rethink your allegiance to their work.

Talking about enlightenment on social media is like handing out shots of water at happy time in a busy dive bar.

It’s been a while since we’ve had one of those.

I don’t remember the character names and complete plots of all the films in the Criterion Fellini set, but I remember the experience of watching each one during Covid. These movies helped save my sanity while being locked in a vacancy.
