After 2 years of writing, I sent this out for review today.

No. Only a fool would describe this project as "a cornerstone for citywide economic development for decades to come," since every attempt to do this has failed. 50 years of research has demonstrated that sports venues don't promote economic development. buff.ly/6FGr6eC

The funding plan for Brook Park is more set than for Las Vegas.

Any San Antonio representative who approached the Spurs about a new taxpayer-funded arena, when the team wasn't asking for one, should be recalled from office, immediately.

Sports venue subsidies are not the product of teams extracting consumer surplus through relocation threats. The cause is local leaders who benefit from the perks associated with professional sports, who willingly hand out taxpayer dollars for access. woai.iheart.com/featured/san...

This means that antitrust remedies, such has splitting up leagues, won't work to curtail stadium subsidies. The problem doesn't stem from the market power of leagues, it's jock-sniffing politicians.

What is so strange about the Las Vegas A's stadium saga is that there is seemingly legitimate construction going on at the site. If Fisher has the funding worked out (he's supposedly still seeking investors) why won't he make it public?

On second thought, it reminds me more of college.

I put more effort into my 7th grade science project than John Fisher is putting into the A's Las Vegas relocation.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results.

Just a friendly reminder that any researchers with working papers in the public finance and sports space should reach out to me. I've got a standing offer for a special issue and would love to take the editor up on it. Papers don't have to be US-centric but lessons for policy in US is needed.

If San Antonio is such a crappy market for basketball, then just move and stop lecturing taxpayers about how it will be good for them to hand over their money to you. And then where will you move? Oh right, all available markets are similarly sized or smaller.

Claiming to be 27th (really 19th) in market size among 30 NBA teams, some of which get subsidies, isn't a compelling reason to underwrite a private business. Maybe find a new business. In any event, the Spurs already have a public arena that got a $100 mil renovation in 2015.

Here's a summary of my findings, all based on published peer-reviewed research.
