Other men will overcome this dark and bitter moment when treason seeks to prevail. Go forward knowing that, sooner rather than later, the great avenues will open again where free men will walk to build a better society.

- Salvador Allende (1908-1973), final radio address, 9/11/73

What type of directions do you give to them about how to draft their questions?

I think the original (white) owners sold sometime in the 1990's. The succeeding (Black) owners may have lost some of the old customers as the neighborhood resegregated and as the industry around the area declined.

Went out of business sometime in the early 2000's I think. I think it may have been another restaurant for a while. I think it has been vacant for about 10? years.

For anyone unfamiliar with the neighborhood, I wrote a series of short blog posts about Miller Beach last year. This one talks about what Miller Beach is to Gary today - the only consistently economically stable, racially integrated neighborhood in the city - and how it got there.

The former Margie's Italian Beef. My good friend Mike Kelly and I used to go there together in the 1980's and 1990's, just as our fathers had done in the 1960's and 1970's.

Attention Dwight H Perkins nerds:
Green flyer with a photo of Dwight H Perkins just in case you thought this was about the guy you sat next to in third grade who picked his nose. It’s not that Dwight.

RIP actor & Chicago native Ron Dean.

He interrogated Dr. Richard Kimble in THE FUGITIVE, he dropped Andy off at detention in THE BREAKFAST CLUB, he was shot by Harvey Dent in THE DARK KNIGHT, he was Marty Crane's poker buddy on FRASIER, and so much more.

At least 6 unhoused Chicagoans have been abducted by federal agents since September: 2 have been released, while the status of the remaining 4 is unknown. But the Chicago Coalition to End Homelessness is investigating reports of an additional 19 people disappeared.

Plus: state and local leaders crack down on anti-ICE protesters and advocates ask the chief judge to keep ICE out of county courthouses.

Because certainly there's no reason why this history might be terrifyingly relevant right now, here's a link to preorder @stschrader1.bsky.social's "Blue Power" on how police in the US organized to exempt themselves from democratic oversight and control: redemmas.org/titles/48838...

I, however,
Have such meagre power,

Clutching at a
Moment,

While you control
An hour.

But your hour is
A stone.

My moment is
A flower.

-Langston Hughes, "Poet to Bigot"
#everynightapoem As ever.
I have done so little
For you.
And you have do little
For me.
That we have good reason
Never to agree.

I, however,
Have such meagre power,
Clutching at a
Moment,
While you control
An hour.
But your hour is
A stone.
My moment is
A flower.

🔥 On this night in 1871, the Great Chicago Fire began in the O’Leary barn. Cameras existed—but early ones were too slow to capture the chaos. What we have instead: Currier & Ives lithographs and a cry that still defines us “CHICAGO SHALL RISE AGAIN!” 💪 https://bit.ly/3ZIjjDI
