I agree with this! Sometimes, with redirection, students can internalize "I'm a bad person," but you need to remind them: the behavior was wrong, but you're not bad. #TeacherEd #SafeSchools
I agree! I actually think CASEL's (a big name for social emotional learning) includes going beyond individual social-emotional learning in their framework. #TeacherEd #SafeSchools
I actually like this. Something that I've done is talking to them separately and then bringing them together in the end to see if there's a resolution that can be made. #TeacherEd #SafeSchools
I see that! Being a safe space for students is very important. You may be the only one they can talk to. What also helped is speaking to them calmly and see if they can think about what it would be like if they were on the receiving end. I noticed they "get" it. #TeacherEd #SafeSchools
I definitely agree with this! Sometimes they just need a hug too! Talking to them 1:1 helps and lets me know things I couldn't have found out if I spent more time talking about it during my teaching time.

I agree! It definitely messes with the classroom dynamic, but I noticed when the teacher takes a stand against certain behaviors, students will follow suit. #TeacherEd #SafeSchools
I agree! As of late, I've been realizing that a lot of behaviors may arise from things happening behind the scenes, which is no excuse, but especially with kids, they might not have tools to deal with it healthily, so giving them that assistance helps. #TeacherEd #SafeSchools
I like this because there's a protocol and communication with the parents and other teachers to ensure everyone is in the loop regarding a student's behavior. I think providing different consequences is key instead of continuing to give warnings. #TeacherEd #SafeSchools
LITERALLY! Modeling behavior is very important! Students feed off of what you do as a teacher, so doing behaviors that I want my kids to do is important. It's a lesson for me to be more consistent and follow for next year. #TeacherEd #SafeSchools
I like this: giving students a sense of ownership in how they respond. I've seen kids do shocking things when given the things to try and fix their error. #TeacherEd #SafeSchools
I like that! I noticed that I often asked what's the expectation for "x" and received the choice on how I can respond. I noticed it's easier for me if I know the expectations and responses, so I can enforce it, rather than think of my response "on the fly." #TeacherEd #SafeSchools
I'd love to hear more about how you address that at BTSN. And how do you address cultural differences and preventing that from getting bigger, i.e. it may seem offensive for one culture but fine in another? #TeacherEd #SafeSchools
The glow notes sound fun! I notice I tended to do it with specific students (who needed more redirection), but I want to see how I can incorporate that for students who don't need redirection often! Like they should be praised too in the classroom and at home. #TeacherEd #SafeSchools
I too enjoyed creating the newsletter! It can also serve as introduction to the classroom and how they can help create a safe environment in the class too. #TeacherEd #SafeSchools
I really like the idea of checking in with team members about whether they see similar problems. It keeps one from thinking, "Is it just me," and then can start moving towards more action steps. Seeing people as people on your team can help with collaboration. #TeacherEd #SafeSchools
I really like this - keeping a calm and positive attitude. Students can feel when the environment feels "off," so it's best to try to keep a classroom calm and peaceful as often as possible. There may be times there is a shift, but it shouldn't be the norm. #TeacherEd #SafeSchools
I really like this! It feels very firm, letting students know not to play. I also like the fact that you're sharing that you deserve respect as well and are holding yourself and your students to the same rules. #TeacherEd #SafeSchools
Emphasis on the clear and concise classroom rules! Through an assignment we did, I learned it's important to be detailed as well! We can have a rule of "be kind," but how exactly are we being kind? Teaching that in the everyday is important! #TeacherEd #SafeSchools
Showing kindness was a big one for me! I saw kids respond to how I act, so if I act kind to a student, they'll copy that behavior, but if they notice I'm being frustrated, they might be more short-tempered with a classmate as well. #TeacherEd #SafeSchools
This is cool to know you want to learn more! Q: Do you have a schedule for uploading? #TeacherEd #EdTech
Same! The emails have been great, and I loved a teacher's recommendation that if it won't make sense via email, just call to make it easier! #TeacherEd #EdTech
I wasn't consistent with the weekly newsletters, but I did send newsletters throughout the month! It was easier doing emails because it's one platform to manage, and I could use similar templates! I've heard positive things with ClassDojo though! I'd love to check it out. #TeacherEd #EdTech
All of these ways are valid for technology use. I enjoy Edutopia A LOT, in terms of learning about how to be an effective teacher. I have seen distractions in my first grade class, where students get curious and start wandering on the internet. It's a balance to engage with that. #TeacherEd #EdTech
Yes! I use technology to store my data (running records), and I'm able to write my notes on my documents, which is better than having all those individual sheets to look through. I also enjoy the sites that provide data for our students, i.e. IXL or iReady. #TeacherEd #EdTech
Yes. In the beginning of the year, I spent time teaching students how to sign in. Initially, I thought it slowed us down in terms of diagnostics, but it actually paid off later because the kids were signing in themselves, not relying on me to do it. Training is key. #TeacherEd #EdTech
