I thought something similar after seeing a whole shelf of books at a shop on WWII and other 20th century history. It was a little depressing seeing how we seemed to have learned from it.

I've definitely seen this dynamic. People bring up the NG activations, their interlocutor responds "and you know the Democrats say crime isn't a problem in DC?" Cynicism in conversation yes, but also a more fundamental satisfaction in unilateral action.
