3..Africa is already in a debt crisis is borrowing money to build infrastructure for European prosperity.
4.It is high time that the GG reflects on the critique from civil society: get over the transactional approach, support a genuine transition instead of creating green dependency.

1. GG need co-designing: full consultation of people living in the country and effected by the projects, not just
announcements from Brussels.
2. Partner countries are not battlefields for geopolitical rivalries.

Yesterday, on the eve of the EU's #GlobalGateway Forum, organisations monitoring GG projects in Africa, Central Asia and Europe provided their perspective on 4 years of its operations- views that might not be voiced during the forum given the limited CSO participation. 🧵

#FfD4 is far from the milestone for global economic governance reform it could have been.

For #CivilSociety, it's clear that the job is not done. We need real reform, not a watered-down consensus.

A large, diverse crowd of protesters gathers beneath las Setas in Seville, Spain, holding colorful signs and banners advocating for economic justice, climate action, and global equity. Prominent signs include messages like "Dignity Not Debt" and "Global Economic Justice Now." A large inflatable globe is also visible. Overlaid at the top of the image is bold white text reading: "FfD4: JOB NOT DONE!"

#FfD4 will set the agenda for how the global economic system will serve #development in the coming years.

European governments should show the political will that is needed for #EconomicJustice. The time is now! ⏰

The EU has to try harder to come up with a credible offer for #FfD4. The #debt crisis - exacerbated by #climate emergencies - and drastic #aid cuts make international cooperation more urgent than ever.

Just 4 countries met their #aid commitment in 2024, while 24 countries met their commitment to defence. @jeansaldanha.bsky.social asks if there is this political commitment to sacrifice strongly held debt & deficit ceilings for defence, what is stopping them from doing so for #development?
4 OECD DAC countries met or exceeded their commitment to allocate 0.7% of GNI to aid in 2024

WHILE

24 NATO members met or exceeded their commitment to allocate 2% of GNI to defence in 2024

Three EU countries met the 0.7% GNI commitment in 2024. The DAC average was 0.33%
In 2024, 15 out of 23 EU members in NATO met the 2% commitment. The NATO average was 2.71%

⚠️Alarm bells are ringing for the future of #aid, as new data from @oecd-ocde.bsky.social show a 7.1% drop in 2024.
This is the first time #ODA has fallen since 2017, and paints a bleak picture for those living in the world's poorest countries.

Wealthy countries appear to be making these cuts with a startling degree of short-sightedness and impunity.

Will rich countries abandon aid in 2025?
Unpacking the latest ODA data and announcements

Aid is under attack, let's protect it!

New data from 2024 is likely to show that rich countries, yet again, failed to meet their aid commitments. Low income countries are likely to be the most heavily impacted, and this is just a taste of what is to come in 2025. Rich countries also face no accountability for this broken promise - because they set the rules themselves, at the OECD. This has to change!

Join us online for an expert panel reacting to:
* The OECD's preliminary data for 2024 and recent aid announcements
* The implications for the global south
* Why now is the moment to move governance of aid to the United Nations

My message with @oxfameu.bsky.social & @actionaideu.bsky.social as #FfD4 negotiations resume today: The EU can ensure finance serves sustainable development and a climate just future. Promoting half baked initiatives or institutions that are limited in so many ways is simply not credible.
eurodadnews.bsky.social
Now the EU have their best shot at financial justice, but they'll miss this golden opportunity if the #GlobalGateway is their only offer.

The world is facing an unprecedented crisis, and right now we need a @ec.europa.eu that champions multilateralism.

#FfD4 this June is a key chance for the #EU to walk the talk and strengthen the #UN's role in #development. Yet, their engagement so far has been disappointing.
