Two books to recommend to my publishing/literary friends. "Shelf Life" is an incredible history of publishing and bookselling in England, and the forthcoming "Nothing Random" (January, 2026) is a compelling read on Bennett Cerf and the powerhouse publisher Random House. Highly recommended.
Blue Sky friends who are in the Chicago area, please note that The Bookstore of Glen Ellyn is hosting a signing for "World Of Wonders: A Spirituality of Reading," on Saturday, October 4, 2025. The independent general trade bookstore is at 475 N. Main in Glen Ellyn. Drop by for a chat or a copy!
I'm pleased to see Jon Hirst launch a new initiative, "Innovation in Mission: Powering Ideas That Bring Change." You can learn more at the link below. I highly recommend Jon and his work. innovationinmission.com/how-it-works

J. Dana Trent's "Between Two Trailers" was among my favorite reads of all of 2024, so it was a delight to receive her commendation for "World of Wonders," coming this fall from Paraclete Press. Pre-order a copy from your local bookstore or directly @ParacletePress.com.
Today is #WorldBookDay, an international observance to symbolically honor literature. I appreciate what Byron Borger said about my forthcoming book "World of Wonders: A Spirituality of Reading." Coming fall 2025. Pre-order at @bookshop.org or your local bookstore.
“Nations reel and stagger on their way; they make hideous mistakes; they commit frightful wrongs; they do great and beautiful things. And shall we not best guide humanity by telling the truth about all this, so far as the truth is ascertainable?” - W.E.B. Du Bois (1935)
A beautiful new book from @slantbooks.bsky.social exploring the richness of the classical music repertoire: Mozart, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Rimsky-Korsakov and more. The title Spirto Gentil translates from the Italian as 'gentle spirit,' an apt description for what's in these pages. Beautiful!
I'm looking forward to this May 2, 2025 release of a 1974 live concert recording from Tokyo, "Saturnight: Cat Stevens Live in Tokyo." Available now for pre-order!
Grateful to see Bookshop.org has my forthcoming project "World of Wonders" up for pre-order. I'll share more about the book in the coming weeks. bookshop.org/p/books/worl...

It's a good day for a listen to "Teaser and the Firecat" by Cat Stevens, and a re-read of the children's book of the same name - both released in 1971.
What a time capsule: The great trumpet player Maynard Ferguson, from 1971 - covers of "My Sweet Lord," "Fire and Rain," "Your Song" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water," among others. open.spotify.com/album/7e05vE...

"In the world where I choose to live, even the coldest winter must yield to agents of spring and the darkest view of human nature must eventually find room for shafts of light."

Madeleine Albright, "Prague Winter: A Personal Story of Remembrance and War, 1937-1948 (HarperCollins, 2013, p. 414).
Billy Collins, in the "By the Book" interview in the New York Times Book Review, in response to the question: "Has the internet changed your writing?"
"The internet asks us to speed up. Poetry invites us to slow down. I write with a pencil and paper, then use the computer only as a fancy typewriter. So no change really, except in its role as the most persistent distraction in human history."

Billy Collins, New York Times Book Review, 12/1/24
Congrats on the pending publication. Chuck is a friend and his foreword speaks well of the book, and the title is quite captivating. Best wishes as you release it into the world!

"Mute words and tags" — this functionality alone will keep me on Bluesky so much longer than any other network. The quality of my experience just skyrockets. (Wouldn't it be great to have starter packs for "mute words and tags"?)
I'm enjoying the violin work of Vilde Frang of Oslo, Norway - especially her Mozart violin concertos and her work with the Elgar repertoire. What lovely music! open.spotify.com/album/7vgWmy...
