"Curiosity"

This is the second iteration in my series of illustrations celebrating A. D. Sui's upcoming sci-fi epic "The Iron Garden Sutra"

@thesuiway.bsky.social 's descriptions always leave me yearning for more moss in my spaceships.

Pre-order now if you yearn for it too!
A tangle of open palms and twisting vines reaching down in a radially symmetric tapestry towards a blooming colorful flower at the center giving off small flecks of pollen from a trumpet-like central structure.

"Meditation at the Northern Temple"

This illustration is the first part of a series I'm working on to celebrate "The Iron Garden Sutra", an upcoming work of science fiction by A. D. Sui.

TYSM @thesuiway.bsky.social for sending me an ARC!

A monk in white robes bathed in pure pearlescent light from a doorless opening. An incense stick burns what looks like a real ribbon weaving about in the air. Geometric swirls are turbulently spinning across the page, filling up the temple A quote from the book:

Machinations far greater than his life were playing in the universe. The directive had been placed before his eyes, and it was his duty to carry it out.
He would miss the temple, like he always did, but not for a long while, and by then a new adventure would be sure to dim the homesickness.
Smoothing out his white robe and trousers, Iris rose. The warm, cream marble beneath his bare feet flushed peach against the rays of the rising sun. A stifling day it would be when the sun hit its zenith, but he would be long gone before midday. A ribbon of saffron smoke wove towards the domed ceiling from the single stick of incense, keeping time of Iris’s sitting. He bowed deeply to excuse himself.
No time to waste.

A history lesson

Anime club programs started in the '90s, as a way to:

1. Build goodwill
2. Create new customers
3. Generate catalog interest
4. Mitigate piracy

Having legal access to anime reduced the need for tape trades. This feels like a bean counter saw a line item and said "Fuck them kids"

What benefit is there to Crunchyroll to cut off libraries? In this political climate, it's a pretty awful PR choice and yet another way of booting the medium's target demo.

Anime fans start young and they don't have credit cards.
