Thanks for highlighting underrepresented voices in the podcast space like Jon Favreau’s.

I’m heading to GSA representing both Tarleton and Texas Tech and keep thinking it’d be funny to have a hat for each and make a big deal of switching them depending on the event or who I’m talking to and it's so dumb I'm doing it

Saw a post that at core AI makes us dumb and paranoid and damn

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

Just got a note from a dear family friend who moved to Colorado after a gutting divorce and the loss of her son and she’s telling me about this beautiful new life she is building and NO I DON’T WANT TO SUMMARIZE THIS MESSAGE USING META AI

omg, I'm having the students do a physical geography data collection project and one student brought his PARENTS to his field site and included a picture of them sitting in beach chairs in the intertidal zone in his field report.

Ah yes, the sterile and anonymous world of online teaching ;)

One thing I love about teaching is that you have many opportunities to be compassionate.

Totally! Finally, I am not playing AI cop. By looking behind the curtain, I'm seeing them struggle to use it ethically, just like we are.

There is so much nuance! Next semester, I might have them design an AI use policy for me ;)
jennbernstein.bsky.social
Most students use AI, but they use it for different reasons and in different ways.

I strongly recommend instructors offer an opportunity for students to be honest about their AI use with fear of being reprimanded. It's fascinating.

“New education technologies are only as powerful as the communities that guide their use. Opening a new browser tab is easy; creating the conditions for good learning is hard.”
- Professor Justin Reich, MIT, who has some lessons from recent history
What past education technology failures can teach us about the future of AI in schools
It can take years to collect evidence that shows effective uses of new technologies in schools. Unfortunately, early guesses sometimes go seriously wrong.

Firefly image AI was overrepresenting white male doctors. Instead of fixing it to match the profession’s demographics, they fixed it to match the U.S. census. Now 13% of AI “doctors” are Black because 13% of Americans are.

This is weirding me out.
