I've started to lose trust in research from certain places - trial results always seem too perfect. Every outcome is p<0.0001, recruitment is fast... Is it just me?

AI is changing fast - so how might it affect life with aphasia?

I covered some possibilities in an #aphasia-friendly talk to members of the National Aphasia Association 🇺🇸
Bryn Bowles, who lives with aphasia, also spoke about how she uses AI in daily life. #aphasia

Thanks for highlighting our review! An under researched area that I’m looking forward to shedding more light on‼️

Glad to see it changing with developments like the AAA course and @nelsonjslp.bsky.social’s PhD work creating and intervention

Exactly! It came through strongly in our co-design work that people who suddenly found themselves “carers” of family with aphasia felt unprepared, undersupported and overwhelmed.

Assessment is a key challenge of this area for sure! In fact I hope to have a PhD student looking at Ax soon.

For fantastic insights into the challenges of "very mild" aphasia, see Cavanaugh & Haley, 2020; Mozeiko & Pascariello, 2020.

Later this year, we’ll work directly with stroke survivors with mild aphasia to:
🔍 Evaluate how well existing assessments capture their real-world communication challenges
🎯 Identify their priorities for treatment and management
💡 Co-design innovative, targeted interventions

Despite this, clinicians have very little evidence-based guidance—because few tailored treatments have been designed for very mild aphasia. I’m therefore really pleased to be kicking off a new program of research looking at mild/very mild aphasia, with seed funding from @latrobeuni.bsky.social 2/5
