Hello and welcome to my post MIGW/PAX/SXSW Sydney wrap up thread for 2025. Enjoy your stay, my opinions are correct, probably. I'm very tired, but in a good way. Sorry for the long thread:

What a two weeks. I saw so many games, met so many wonderful people, and felt even more emotions.

The funniest thing about this post is that Larian is a universally critically acclaimed studio.

So the only criticism he could possibly be complaining about here is the backlash he specifically got from wanting to force his devs to use genAI.

Lol. Lmao even
Extremely funny to somehow not be aware that the most rancid, cruel, soul-calloused people in this space are not games critics but the reply guys who mass harrass and dox them

Ubisoft unions have unanimously voted to strike from Feb 10-12, due to waves of layoffs, lack of job security, and the end of remote working.

Sometimes I think it'd be a good idea for shit-takes to be scored, Metacritic-style, based on how others evaluate their shit-takes. I like to imagine it would encourage more restraint. Harsh words do real damage. You shouldn't have to grow callus on your soul just because you want post shit-takes.

I guess I do think if you participated in the arrest of a five-year-old you are probably just fundamentally incompatible with society. That you are not a safe person for humanity to be around, generally

As one of Freeplay's 11(ish) board members, I want to add my personal 2 cents to a few things about Freeplay in these fried af times. It's important to know I'm just a meager part of the Voltron that is Freeplay, and these are my personal opinions + do not reflect the view of the org or the board

Perhaps the most disgraceful of all the “national security” laws that have been passed since Sept 11 2001.

Albanese would have been a good, compliant minister in the Howard govt.

I interviewed Freeplay's co-founder Katharine Neil a couple of years ago about its origins & legacy. There was SO much fascinating stuff that I couldn't publish but I'm still really proud of the piece & feel as if documenting this stuff holds a tiny bit of importance too.

Freeplay is the longest running independent games festival in the world. This is incredibly sad news and it needs all the support it can get.
An update: Unfortunately Freeplay didn’t secure multi-year funding and is potentially looking at its last year of operation. We’re exploring what comes next & want your input.

It is so, so, SO hard to put on any arts or games event. I cannot stress enough that you should never take them for granted or think ‘well they’ll just figure it out’. Running any event is a job outside of your (sometimes more than 1) fulltime job. Find ways to help and support them, champion them.

Australia’s inability to recognise and support its burgeoning arts fields is endemic. Our systems are designed to keep our culture regressive and it’s very embarrassing.
terrible news coming out of Freeplay. I really hope it & Parallels can continue.

Cancel. Genuinely. Cancel. A rejection at the border is a permanent mark against entry, forever.

If you insist, follow dangerous territory protocols: know your embassy details, make sure someone knows your travel details, and have funds for emergency legal, health, and departure expenditures.
