We’ve seen countless articles in the tabloids recently whipping up fear about immigration & fuelling division based on very little: patchy crime data based on some court listings, now speculation based on a couple of planning applications. If this was a done deal, then money spent on that wasted consultation could have been much better spent elsewhere - as could the almost £1m it will cost to establish these new unwanted town councils.

In an increasingly divided world, this issue has actually united people from across the political spectrum - who have come together to say we do not want this. In continuing to ignore local opinion and proceed as planned, it is making a mockery of the consultation they ran.

Brilliant news - maintenance grants are coming back for students from low-income households in Bournemouth West. Scrapped in 2016, they'll now support disadvantaged students on priority courses. Funded by a levy on international fees. Full details revealed at the Autumn Budget.

We must step up our efforts to stop the spread of antisemitism. I continue to stand with the Jewish community here in Bournemouth. Dorset Police assured me earlier today that they are taking steps to protect Jewish residents. I have reached out to the local Synagogue to offer sympathy and support.

Everyone deserves to be able to attend their place of worship without fear of attack. The attack in Manchester today marks an incredibly tragic day for the Jewish community. My thoughts are with the families of those affected, and Jewish residents in Bournemouth who will understandably be worried.

Last week we introduced the historic Hillsborough Law - inspired by campaigns for justice for Hillsborough, Grenfell and Windrush. The legislation introduces a duty of candour with criminal sanctions, expanded legal aid for families, and a new offence of misleading the public.
