#TeacherEd professor, mom, interested in #privacy #tech #AI & #education

🤯 1 of my students with a #Google watch showed me the new #Gemini app with voice integration. 1) Educators are NOT prepared for this level of #AI access/integration; 2) this manifests the disparate experience of & access to #AI & tech due to #socioeconomic status
Very excited that my second session proposal for #SCAET #scaet25 -this one for #NotebookLM Educators’ workshop on using this great #AI tool from #Google —will be added to the schedule ! 👍
For my #scaet25 presentation, been playing with building #agentic #AI to address #SREB call for using #AI tools to increase cognitive rigor for #lessonplans & activities along DOK3 & 4 in #HessCognitiveRigor matrix —but without an institutional tool. static.pdesas.org/content/docu...

Trying to keep the #education sector current with #technology is an ouroboros involving upskilling all stakeholders from professors in faculties of education to teachers working in the classroom—as well as the administrators, IT, and support staff—at virtually the same time. #Edtech #AIEd #BCEd
And the emergence, explosive public & commercial adoption of #AI have only further strained this situation in #education & #edtech. We still have not emerged from the #DigitalDivide & the growing #AIGap only compounds the associated challenges for #education #AIEd #EduSky
Increasing acceleration of #technology advances in the last 20 years have strained traditional practices & approaches to #education #policy —which, by nature of the institution is conservative when it comes to change & is not accustomed to dynamic orientations to policy-making. #EduSky #AIEd
Too often in #education we contemplate our local and national navels when considering emerging & best practices & policies. #AIEd #BCEd
When in the #EdTech field— especially around #AIEd —it is important to have some familiarity with what is happening not only in your own —or nearby—jurisdiction—as well as your national landscape—but leaders should also be intentionally scanning the broader international landscape. #EduSky #BCEd
Even ‘super users’ of #EdTech need to be reminded of the higher stakes of #privacy & #copyright when using #AI —along with its limitations we often cite—bias, accuracy, data provenance—but also the social and environmental impacts that often get overlooked. #AIEd #EduSky
The importance of access to institutional #AI tools under contracts or licenses for educators who want to use #AI cannot be overstated—nor can adequate grounding in #professionalism #privacy #copyright with ProD training on those tools. #AIEd #EduSky
My agentic #AI & #FPPL #instructionaldesign project will have a small place on our #VIUEd poster at the upcoming symposium by the Assoc of Canadian Deans of Education in at #UBC in Vancouver #BCEd #ABCDE #EduSky Project is in its infancy but am excited about it.
Trying to be respectful & honour #Indigeous culture while coming at it from a non-Indigenous #instructionaldesign perspective.
Hope to write something up on the attempt with a couple of Indigenous people in my immediate circle in the winter—so stay turned. They are both pretty busy…😉 #BCEd #EduSky
Been experimenting with agentic #AI tools to build a semantic #instructionaldesign tool to help build a cognitive/semantic bridge for non- #Indigenous educators trained in #ID to connect & implement #BC First People’s Principles of Learning #FPPL #BCEd #EduSky
Been experimenting with emerging personal agentic #AI tools that don’t require coding or hosting beyond accounts with my regular #LLMs#Gemini #Gems & now custom #GPTs with #ChatGPT as instructional supports. #AIEd #EduSky
I am so excited to be attending #SCAET #scaet25 this year & presenting on #professionalism & #AIEd . edtech.scaet.org has so many excellent looking sessions. I will have a hard time deciding what to attend outside of my session.

Been dark here for a while—had a lot going on but all good now. Tending to family health—luckily was looking after others & they are literally on their feet again—then school started—and well here I am again👍
“In the gray zone between the arrival gate and passport control you are beyond the reach of the U.S. Constitution. You have fewer protections than a criminal metres away, inside the border. People with legal standing are much harder, it turns out, to abuse.”
Anyone researching the extent to which ‘average people’ (no training or expertise in counselling or therapy) are using #GenAI for personal counseling or coaching? #AIEd #EduSky #AI
Very kind of you. Thanks.
Audience capture & content creators: “They see what sort of thing earns them clicks, likes, reshares, and customers, and, consciously or not, they begin to produce more of it.” R. Monroe “DREW PINSKY IS AMERICA’S DOCTOR. WHATEVER THAT MEANS NOW.” In Men’s Health May/June 2025
Just learned a new term: “audience capture”. It’s when “content creators… give their followers more of what they want, which leads to more engagement”; “It’s the idea that influencers become radicalized by their audience…” from recent Men’s Health article on Dr Drew Pinsky
I submitted 2 #AI - themed sessions for the South Carolina Association for Educational Technology Conference for 2025. Will see if they are interested in either.... #SCAET #AIEd #EduSky

In my first op-ed for @nytimes.com, I argue that the alliance between Silicon Valley & the US government is a threat to democracy. The Republican tax bill now up in the Senate, which would ban states from regulating AI for a decade, will only cement that trajectory. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/30/o...

For those of us around long enough in #BCEd --we can remember when BC was out ahead with a "Digital Literacy Framework" that got drownd out by the "New Curriculum" (lack of resourcing as well) that IMO did not do justice to the groundwork laid in that earlier document.
