3/ The story is instructive on how to write a good dark fiction, suspense story. But its deus ex machina conclusion also stands as a warning to avoid easy endings! A classic well worth reading if you haven't read it before.

2/The narrator is tied and blindfolded and is almost killed by a pendulum, but by clever strategy is able to escape. Then the walls start to close in! The story has vivid descriptions that take you into the scene and play on your senses-and on your mind.

One of my favorite dark fiction stories is Edgar Allan Poe's Pit and the Pendulum from 1842. In the story, an unnamed narrator is imprisoned by the Spanish Inquisition in a dungeon.

Duolingo Update 2/ So enough people must have deleted the app or there was enough social media push back that they had to relent. At least now I can do some language lessons again in addition to playing chess.

Duolingo Update: At long last there seems to be at least some improvement with Duolingo in recent weeks. You can access explanations for mistakes on the free app. Also, you can add to your energy by watching ads when you would like to. In the past, Duolingo decided when you could top up your energy.

1/ I've been using Duolingo for just over ten years. As the app becomes more cumbersome to use in its free version, I now mainly use it to play chess and do the math challenges. As a language learning app, the free version is almost impossible to use thanks to the new energy system.

Today saw the breakdown of Cloudflare a site that provides security services for many sites around the Web. Many sites I visit were down for a while, including job search sites which I need to access. It just shows how fragile and vulnerable the Web can be.

I haven't been posting for a while due to various health issues. Will be posting more soon about classic horror and science fiction stories and music too sometimes. Will also be posting about reflections on life.
