#booksky the ultimate dose of “kafkaesque,” 😏 Seriously though, the seemingly (and sometimes actually) arbitrary things in life that somehow imprison us - especially the things which we can’t control or that seem inaccessible - are a key theme. #relevant, probably.

Two sisters from a small Louisiana town, both desperate to leave. Eventually, they both manage to escape - one shortly returns home after some hard luck and the other, having created a new life for herself, abandons her roots throughout most of her adult life.

#booksky i enjoyed this: Muna, recently immigrated with her son to Montreal from Lebanon in the 1980s, works for a better life for herself and her son, Omar. Meanwhile she works in sales for a weight loss outfit and has interesting conversations with her clients.

Tortilla Flat is excellent. It reminded me very much of a late friend who was our “Danny.” And like Danny’s friends from the story, all of us went our separate ways after he died. Sad, but that’s life sometimes. Still, give it a read!

#booksky interesting find… I’m about to start Tortilla Flat - I’m reading a Penguin Books copy printed in 1986. There’s a mail order form in the back, expected. Unsurprising. But there are no prices shown, just a reference to sales tax. What am I missing? Lay it on me if it’s obvious!

#booksky this dystopian nightmare takes place in near-present day Ireland. The take away for me was to take nothing for granted. I love some good modern fiction so I’d recommend it. I found it a page turner!

#booksky Quite a risqué novel for its time; I felt like I was reading smut I tell ya! Not really - great story and one key theme, at least in my interpretation: love and happiness don’t always come hand in hand, and finding both at the same time can be difficult!

#booksky what a harrowing tale of the journey to California from the settled Midwest in 1846! It’s ‘Oregon Trail’ in book form, with horses and covered wagons, as well as sickness and death along the way. This story also made me appreciate modern conveniences!

#booksky While reading this hasn’t pushed me towards communism, the theory of it is interesting. Side note: the word “Marxist” is frequently used as an insult, but I’m not convinced the people using it actually understand it. For them, this might be worth a read.

This book might make you rethink your own diet — but even if not, it explains the persistence of ultra-processed foods despite known health consequences and it’s also good background for why food deserts are so dangerous for people living in them.

Great book if you’re interested in Soviet history, especially around crime and punishment. Note this is one of three volumes though, so a significant time commitment is required 🕰️
