In Timely Persuasion I’m first heard leaving a message on an answering machine in 2001. In Done Gone I proposition Local Boy in person after a gig in 1969. But since you can read the books in either order AND I’m a time traveler, “first appearance” isn’t so straightforward…

Billie Holiday died of an opium overdose during the musicians strike of 1942. Rumors of a government hit related to anti-lynching protest song “Strange Fruit” popped up in my research, but no reporter sourced definitive proof.

Day 25: Writing advice

Two faves:

1. Use the gifts you give yourself. Characters & locations & items you’ve created earlier will help later. Don’t invent a new one-off if you can bring back something existing.

2. Removing “that” from a sentence makes it better 80% of the time.

Stick is my favorite Jim Bob solo album since Humpty Dumpty Thing (and his funnest record since Big Flash Car). “Our Forever Home” from Automatic might be his most heartfelt songwriting since “This Phoney War.” Nice double set from my all-time favorite lyricist.

Day 23: restore

Local Boy accepts a groupie’s invitation to her van after a gig in 1969. He hasn’t yet realized she drove him to 1994…

We drove all night. That’s not a euphemism. It’s also not entirely accurate since it was still dark, so there was some night left. I’d slept through most of it. Not good form for a passenger and generally unlike me, but for some reason I was zonked.

The driver didn’t mind. She patted my leg, and seeing I was awake squeezed my hand. Human contact got my heart pumping and restored my sleepy senses.

Day 19

In Timely Persuasion no character names are given so it’s all nicknames. (Narrator Blondie, girlfriend the redhead, bowling partner Bowlingus, sister “Sis,” young father Local Boy.)

Done Gone continues this, but casually reveals real names in conversation here & there.

For anyone curious about the #QuantumLeap revival now on #Netflix

-First episode isn’t very good

-Second is much better

-Third is terrific

-Fourth ok but a step back

-Remaining 27 episodes are fantastic with 1-2 stumbles. Equal or better than the original IMHO as a bigtime OG fan

Day 13: mess

My son came to his senses, undoing The Local Boy Years to clean up those messes. Chronicled the whole story in that Timely Persuasion book the redhead annotated.

(This sort of explains how DG is a read in any order sequel & prequel & sidequel & timequel to TP)
