If you’re a person who is typically thankful for baseball generally and the St. Louis Cardinals in particular on the holiday, it might seem a little bit dim this year. The silver lining is this — the direction might be painful, but it at least has been decided:

Turbulent times ahead, but Cardinals fans can be thankful as rebuild takes flight
“We’re not there now, and the way to get there is through building on our core of talent and having promising young talent...”

Timing of the Cease deal makes sense. Not a holiday in Canada tomorrow.

Cardinals announced their coaching staff, returning all as expected. Casey Chenoweth, formerly the Springfield hitting coach, is a new assistant hitting coach. Kyle Driscoll, formerly the minor league pitching coordinator in Arizona, is a new assistant pitching coach.

James Naile is heading back to the KBO for another season. Will be his third year with the Kia Tigers, where he’s been their ace and one of the top starters in Korea.

With all of the excitement of the day done, I would be remiss if I did not mention that I once asked Sonny Gray a six word question — “how would you assess that one?” — and he talked uninterrupted for six and a half minutes. He is an interesting cat.

Bloom said it would be a “pretty good rundown” to describe the state of play in the rotation at present as Liberatore and McGreevy returning as incumbents with Fitts, Leahy and Pallante competing for spots. He did follow that with an extended endorsement of Leahy.
November 25, 2025 at 8:15 PM
Bloom said in his media availability just now that there is "no significant change" in trade status for either Willson Contreras or Nolan Arenado. "Things are exactly where they were when we last talked."
November 25, 2025 at 8:02 PM
Masyn Winn, Iván Herrera, Alec Burleson, Matthew Liberatore, and Victor Scott II all received disbursements in varying amounts between $460K and $213K. And then Vic went and spent his on an engagement ring!

Gray trade now official. Cardinals release says they’re also getting cash or a PTBNL from Boston in addition to the previously reported pieces.
November 25, 2025 at 6:05 PM
Sonny Gray's trade to Boston is perhaps the loudest announcement yet of the beginning of the Chaim Bloom era of Cardinals baseball, and lays bare what has already been nodded toward -- they are prepared to tear it down more or less to the studs:

Cardinals deal pitcher Sonny Gray to Boston. Here’s what they get in return
Gray, who turned 36 this month, signed a three-year deal with the Cardinals ahead of the 2024 season.

One other downstream note of this trade that seemed obvious -- source with knowledge of the Cardinals plans says that Kyle Leahy is being considered a starter, full stop. He is part of that group entering spring, and the expectation is that he will win a rotation spot.
November 25, 2025 at 5:08 PM
Cardinals projected rotation as of this moment by career starts --

1. Pallante (61)
2. Liberatore (53)
3. McGreevy (19)
4. Fitts (14)
5. Maybe you?

They will be going shopping for more.

Cardinals are trading Sonny Gray to Boston, @jonheyman.bsky.social says.
November 25, 2025 at 4:26 PM
Internal loss for the Cardinals. Leger moved into a field coordinator role last year after a stint as the manager at Springfield. Very well regarded.
November 25, 2025 at 2:50 PM
JoJo Romero is drawing trade interest, and if moved, the most experienced incumbent Cardinals reliever is Riley O’Brien. If Sonny Gray is traded, the incumbent ace is…Matthew Liberatore? The Cardinals have avoided saying they’re rebuilding. The roster says it for them:

www.bnd.com/sports/mlb/s...
Inside the Cardinals’ roster redesign: youths, trades, and tough choices
There has thus far been a consistent avoidance of the term “rebuild” in describing the state of the Cardinals’ off-season goals.

Source says Pozo’s deal is a split contract, so he gets paid less than the MLB minimum while in the minors.
Cardinals say they’ve signed Yohel Pozo to a Major League contract, as well as Sem Robberse and Scott Blewett to minor league deals. 40-player goes to 38.

Trying to remember the last time two guys each owed this much money were swapped for each other. Probably missing an obvious one but I’m striking out.

Had free time in Florida today so I popped over to see the construction progress in Jupiter. Little less than three months until pitchers and catchers:

I’m still on vacation until tomorrow night, but as a little treat: Cardinals non-tendered Jorge Alcala (from DFA limbo), John King, Yohel Pozo and Sem Robberse.
