As we’ll all be using this more, a proper introduction: I’m a verification producer with the CBS News Confirmed team in London, by way of Ireland and Erbil and Philly and a bunch of other stops. I specialise mainly in OSINT, defence, conflict, big boats, and, increasingly, the far-right.

Pope Leo XIV has encouraged international news agencies to stand firm as a bulwark against the "ancient art of lying" and manipulation.

It is very German (complimentary) that they've had to make a new law giving the federal police powers to shoot down drones

Interesting case to be made that Europe neglected homeland defence for decades because it was pressured into sending men and women to die in America's wars in Iraq and Afghanistan www.economist.com/internationa...
Europe struggles to put homeland defence first
Years of expeditionary operations leave it vulnerable if America abandons the continent

Armies want landmines because they work. They work well. But they poison the land for generations, and I’ve met too many people whose lives have been destroyed by them.

A piece of mine for @lowyinstitute.bsky.social on Finland's decision to withdraw from the Ottawa Convention on the banning of landmines, and how Russia's aggression is starting to unravel the international agreements around arms control, and the norms of daily behaviour in border regions.
The return of landmines marks a darker era for Europe – and the world
Countries withdrawing from the ban treaty shows how Russian hostility is forcing choices that undermine global norms.

Thales developed a European direct competitor to APKWS eh? How fascinating …
(Not sure how effective a laser-guided anti-drone rocket might be, but it’s worth trying. Testing the system widely in Ukraine is a good plan)

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:

Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

If only we had some recent experiences of Gerrymandering on this island. Too bad history only happened in America
Post by Ritchie Crave saying
A fun thing you can do right now is to reach out to an American friend and tell them that an Irish Presidential Candidate, from the political party currently in power, had to pull out of the race because he withheld €3,300 from a former tennant 16 years ago and watch their faces twitch in envy.

It's shabby to make fun of suffering
Americans. Spend the time figuring out what you, as a voting citizen, are doing against gerrymandering. You know, America likes to export its "culture" to other countries effectively. So you will need it in future election.

I wrote about how vicarious trauma can find you when you least expect it, through two experiences that I've had while working with images as an open source researcher.

Neither were graphic.

Both had a serious impact on me.

At least 11 undersea cables have been cut in the Baltic Sea in the past two years, mostly off Finland’s coast near Russia. These cables carry the lifeblood of modern existence: electricity, gas, global banking, and the internet. The culprit remains a mystery. cbsn.ws/4mHIj5L
