— The press doesn’t have to be all-out, all game, but should have all-out triggers based on their lineup (Sanchez, and if we see Gusto or Tosin). I’d modulate, because I also really hope to start Madueke and preserve his space to run in-behind.

6. Restart quickly + jump their restarts. They’re young and can linger in frustration for a beat, and they’ve also rotated a lot (so not always mind-melded). I’ve noticed a tendency to have costly giveaways on their own quicker restarts.

5. Clear their midfielders out in transition: Like Spurs, they have a ball-watchy pivot: you can distract and drag their midfield out to the edges and then have arrivers come through Zone-14. Bait them into putting a leg in, turn and carry them out wide.

4. Rush them, force errors. I said we should lay off and block lanes against Bayern. I’d go all-out in moments here. A bozo gene appears deep: you can force mistakes. Let them receive, blow them up. Fourth-most dangerous losses in league; Arsenal fewest.

3. Force wingers to defend. Wide full-backs do well in 1v1s, but wingers can cheat, turn off, or lose runners. Force hybrid full-backs into no man’s land by separating from winger. Then, force their wingers to track a million underlaps.

2. Turn defenders. Sanchez is good at claiming direct crosses, but defenders lose runners when forced to turn: ghost behind cutbacks, low crosses, and far-post pops. Don’t feed Sanchez: hit cutbacks or go far-post, head it back into the chaos. Sustain on set pieces + long throws.

1. Test space between CBs+GK. Two issues: Sanchez isn’t the most commanding sweeper, and there’s been chopping/changing in CB pairings. Lack of full trust/comfort. Drop Merino (layoffs/flicks), send runners (Gabi/Noni/Saka) diag between backline and Sanchez, see how they fare. Not aberrational:

31 years ago this month, I warned that America was becoming a two-tiered society composed of a few winners and a larger group left behind, whose anger and disillusionment could be easily manipulated.

I took a lot of heat for this speech. Watch and tell me if I was wrong.

They're quite good. I do think their absences will be helpful. Will be a fun one.

5. Passing lanes: Instead of over-engaging the ball-carrier, track runners and jump attempted line-breakers. They don't really lose it on miscontrols. I noticed they’re only 54.5% completion on line-breakers in the Champions League.

4. Weak-side overcompensation: Their full-backs can sometimes over-help and over-squeeze when the ball is on the other side. This is good for late arrivers at the back post.

3. In general, test recovery pace (and agility) in wide areas. This will compound over the game: because of their injuries/suspensions, our late legs are better than theirs’ (Martinelli, Madueke, etc).

2. Keep CBs second-guessing: Because of their M2M, you can a) pull out a CB and then hit it to a winger in-behind. But also, b) Merino vs Upamecano battle will be one to watch: Merino should win in the air. Double-9 thing could be helpful for midfielders/FBs running in behind.

1. Attacking set pieces: Bayern have surrendered 6 in the Bundesliga, which is 75% of their total goals allowed. They pack the six-yard, but temperamentally, they don’t seem aggressive in chaotic situations in the box. Can be flat-footed. I'd look at flick-ons.
