Garden spiders (Araneus diadematus) can build impressive webs, at least in terms of the distance of the support lines. For the last 2 days this one has built a web where the lines go from the gutter of my kitchen roof to plants below, a distance of just over 2m. @britishspiders.bsky.social

The 2025A juvenile Red Fox Vulpes vulpes vulpes vixen really likes apples. Here is a photograph of her really liking one yesterday afternoon.

Very nice! Maybe it would have been a little less spirited without the help of the Class 67 Diesel!

Local wildlife. Walking home from Sutton this morning I was checking for potential Segestria florentina sites in an alleyway, and sadly came across this dead one below its web. @britishspiders.bsky.social #londonwildlife

2/2. And the pair of Steatoda nobilis have now spent several days together!

Garden wildlife. 1/2. From the fence/house last night. A male Anyphaena numida was on the prowl, as were probably 2 (though the photos were taken at different times, so maybe the same one) male Amaurobius similis. @britishspiders.bsky.social #londonwildlife

Garden birding. A female Great Spotted Woodpecker visiting the feeders earlier today. Unfortunately this one was empty by the time it arrived! #londonbirds #birds
A black and white bird, with red under its tail, on an empty bird feeder, and with another feeder, a branch and tree leaves in the background. A black and white bird, with red under its tail, on an empty bird feeder, and with another feeder, a branch and tree leaves in the background.

2/3. Video of the juvenile male slipping between the rail and the wall. He picks up a Parakeet head as soon as he gets there!

Sutton Peregrines. 1/3. The juvenile male was on camera for about 3.5 hours today, staring with him slipping between the rail and the wall! While he was there he fed on some Parakeet remains, chilled, stretched, preened and had a scratch. #londonbirds #birds

Sutton Peregrines. Both adults on the High Street building this morning, with the female feeding on a Feral Pigeon. #londonbirds #birds

Garden wildlife. Garden spider (Araneus diadematus). @britishspiders.bsky.social #londonwildlife
A spider with grey/brown patterning and white marks resembling a cross, sitting on a leaf, and with one of its back legs touching a strand of its web, and which will alert it to any prey getting trapped. Garden wildlife. 1/2. A couple of Amaurobius similis on the fence last night. I thought one was a male (1st image and top one in the video in 2/2) and the other a female, but that also seems to have palps. I've been advised that that one, and with its back legs moving, is web building.

2/3. and a Harvestman (Odiellus spinosus). Finally a couple of Amaurobius similis - one wandering on the fence and another one just by its web. I've included a short video (in 3/3 below) of the second as its abdomen was moving in and out as if breathing! That's something I've not seen before.

Garden wildlife. 1/3. @britishspiders.bsky.social Some other spiders and a harvestman from last night on the shed, house and fence. First a couple of Anyphaena numidas, followed by a Zygiella x-notata, then two Steatoda nobilis seemingly being quite friendly

2/3. Some are still quite small, and sadly I don't seem to have any really big ones at the moment.

Garden wildlife. 1/3. Last night I found 10 Segestria florentinas! They are still all relatively close together, and 3 were in an area I'd not noticed or properly checked before on one side of the garage door frame.

Sutton Peregrines. Good to see all 3 Peregrines this afternoon, particularly after the strong wind yesterday. The juvenile male was on an east side vent ledge at Quadrant House, and both adults were on the building they use near the High Street. #londonbirds #birds

Local birding. A rather attractive Feral Pigeon in Sutton High Street this afternoon, and perhaps unusually, on its own. #londonbirds
