One bite and I totally got the charm. Japanese milk bread, or shokupan, is a soft, squishy white bread with a craveable, barely sweet flavor. The egg salad was creamy smooth with minced whites.

The first rule is: Do NOT make a grocery list. Look for what is available.
When foods you often cook with are on sale, buy a bunch.
Every supermarket has markdown areas.
Many ingredients are available as much cheaper “house” brands.

Pad Thai was a bowl of terribly rubbery rice noodles tossed with eggs, some veggies and peanuts with bland chicken in a barely spiced sauce. Noodles & Company feels like an old-timer being overwhelmed by the fast-casual kids it helped spawn. #noodlesandcompany

I’ve always enjoyed the filled masa patties from Pupusas Familia, banh mi at Savory Saigon and traditional breakfast at The Orange Tent. Tacos Del Norte dishes spot-on street tacos, and Rang Tang’s ribs with mac-n-cheese are my comfort go-to dishes.

‘American as apple pie’ means it was invented elsewhere and came here as an immigrant
(Happy July Fourth! This was written October, 2008): I believe in pie. My favorite food, bar none, is warm, fresh wild blueberry pie a la moded with good vanilla bean ice cream. But my faith transc…
