In the early days of the Iraq War, several groups volunteered to donate animals to help restock the Baghdad Zoo--with mixed results. (See: uwapress.uw.edu/book/9780295...) It's early still, but does anyone know of similar plans to do the same in Venezuela? If so, please reach out.

Current events & the Jan 6 anniversary have prompted people to say this is the "new" Lost Cause. As someone whose research on the LC is exhaustive, I can tell you this: it is a shape-shifting racist narrative--useful in the late 19thc., then again at mid-20thc., and again from Reagan to Trump.

Of course, fighting the US "militarily" misses the point. An invasion (beyond its immorality and illlegality) would risk violent responses from non-state actors. You know...like in Iraq or Afghanistan...like we've been worrying about since 9/11.
TAPPER: Can you rule out the US is going to take Greenland by force?

MILLER: Greenland should be part of the US. By what right does Denmark assert control over Greenland? The US is the power of NATO

T: So force is on the table?

M: Nobody is gonna fight the US militarily over future of Greenland

The kidnapping of Maduro inaugurates a highly dangerous era of U.S. empire that for perhaps the first time in an era of mass media is not pretending to be anything other than a violent, extractive enterprise of domination.
