Today is a great day for the ocean!

Not only is the new Attenborough Ocean film out today, but I had a sneak peak at the new Great Map at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, and it's FABULOUS. A giant Spilhaus projection with beautifully detailed topography. Opens to the public June 7th. 🌊

WOW! I'd love to see that some day.

I return to @johnnelsonmaps.bsky.social 's Silly Geographic Precision table whenever I see the coordinates in a file I'm trying to make smaller. Latest file was mapping atoms. uxblog.idvsolutions.com/2013/11/sill...
Here's a breakout of coordinate precision by the actual cartographic scale they purport:

Decimal Places
 Actual Distance
Say What?
6	10 centimeters	Your footprint, if you were standing on the toes of one foot.
7	1.0 centimeter	A watermelon seed.
8	1.0 millimeter	The width of paperclip wire.
9	0.1 millimeter	The width of a strand of hair.
10	10 microns	A speck of pollen.
11	1.0 micron	A piece of cigarette smoke.
12	0.1 micron	You're doing virus-level mapping at this point.
13	10 nanometers	Does it matter how big this is?
14	1.0 nanometer	Your fingernail grows about this far in one second.
15	0.1 nanometer	An atom. An atom! What are you mapping?

Ah, an oldie but a goodie! And, ah-hem, 6 years before XKCD did the same thing.

I'll be at in London May 12 for a 1/2 day cartography workshop hosted by @esriuk.bsky.social. If you'd like to spend a half-day of your allotted time on this earth nerding out on map making with me, here are some details. store.esriuk.com/product/arcg...

The #EsriUC agenda is out...and there's BIG news for fans of our Map Wizardry workshop. Not only have we got a third offering for the Friday crowd but we got into the plenary hall on Thursday. Thanks to everyone who ever asked for this!!! No pressure at all 🤪

whoa, just had a crazy idea for getting faded inner hatched ribbons for polygons in ArcGIS Online and it totally worked! now, to try to get back to my original objectives today.
map with red border and faded hatched fill around the interior perimeter

things i like: my authenticator app gives me a two-digit number to access my account. i seem to have an impromptu anecdote for every number, which helps me remember it in the three seconds between seeing it and keying it in.
