Yeah it matters because now he has a cosy private chat with the PM every week. And two of my three examples were examples of the political power of his mother, which she did use while monarch
Was this before or after he wrote his infamous spider letters to members of government? Was it before or after his mum had draft laws changed to accommodate her personal financial interests? Was it before after she warned us to "think carefully" before the Brexit referendum?
I think I'd like to see leading people from the arts, sciences, commerce, sport etc - people with unblemished records - come together to appoint someone (or better still a commission representing all four nations).

That's not the only plus. They also get to choose whether to do it. They don't spend their entire life from cradle to grave with relentless media attention. They don't come with a family if dozens of useless hangers on.
I'd rather see an appointments commission drawn from leaders in all areas of our national life. Electing the position would give it a level of ego it doesn't need.
Well the whole point of a ceremonial position is that it doesn't come with much power. But you could dilute it further by making it a presidential council of four.
Besides which, Edward VIII was a Nazi sympathiser so we'd be no worse off in that respect.
I'm concerned about having the literal figureheads of the aristocrat class in a position which puts them (and everyone like them) beyond scrutiny and beyond political criticism. The Royal family can't even be discussed in parliament by convention.
You know what also consumes time and money? A parasitical family of talentless aristocrats holding a permanent monopoly on the highest status in the land. It is a terrible message to send that status is a birthright not the result of effort and accomplishment.
