Im not a cinema snob or anything but two films that I genuinely don’t understand why so many people love are The Dark Knight Rises and Top Gun Maverick. They’re well made movies sure, but like…they’re just that. Can anyone explain it to me?

Impulsively bought a meta quest 3 because I wanted to make literally 1984 AR programs for personal use. Is there a way to access the pass through camera API? If not an official way, maybe a workaround…?

It's interesting how rights are sometimes qualified as "{noun}'s rights", e.g. worker's rights, and sometimes qualified as "{adjective} rights", e.g. trans rights. The former seems to evoke a universal "rights" that concerns a specific people, while the latter delineates a specific kind of rights.

I dislike the language of "respecting ____'s rights" when it's spoken outside of a purely political context. You don't "respect" something here the way you respect a friend or a mentor; your respect is an affirmation of an Other. As if the rights I am respecting are not *my* rights or *our* rights.

In hindsight, the libertarian spirit of mainstream LGBT advocacy in the 2010s, which focused too much on mutually beneficial apathy instead of genuine understanding, was short-sighted. The conservatives today feel betrayed that their reluctant "respect" (apathy) is not enough (because it never was).

I always hear from people saying that once you start chasing money, prestige, clout, etc. you’ll never have enough.

But has anyone ever just become satisfied at some point without changing their mindset at all? Like “Oh, I guess this is enough. I’m happy now :D “
