HOW TO DIFFERENTIATE REAL GREEN PRODUCTS FROM THE GREENWASHED — CLAIMS SHOULD BE:

Evidence-based:
If a product claims an environmental benefit, compared with the competition, then the claim should be substantiated.

Explained clearly:
Packaging and advertising should explain the product’s green claims in plain language and readable type in close proximity to the claim.

Accurate:
A product’s marketing claim should not overstate, directly or by implication, an environmental attribute or benefit.

Specific:
An environmental marketing claim should specify whether it refers to the product, the packaging, or just a portion of the product or package.

How AI Will Revolutionize the Energy Grid: Energy Storage

Long-duration energy storage is reaching an important turning point.

In 2025 China had several breakthroughs, including activating what is reported to be the world’s first gigawatt-hour vanadium flow battery system, and connecting a hybrid energy storage project combining lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors. ZH Energy launched the first commercial sulfur-iron flow battery, offering long-duration storage at dramatically lower cost — around 85% less than vanadium-based systems.

In 2026, solutions like flow batteries, thermal storage, and next-gen solar cells will become viable at scale. Together, they address one of renewable energy’s biggest challenges: covering the long gaps between periods of generation. This added flexibility will be critical to achieving reliable, round-the-clock Carbon-Free Energy.

How AI Will Revolutionize the Energy Grid: AI Autonomy

Artificial intelligence is on track to become the “brain” of the power grid. In 2026, autonomous AI systems are expected to continuously adjust how electricity is produced and delivered to support cleaner energy use.
These systems will coordinate devices such as EV chargers and Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), responding in real time to grid conditions.

When needed, they can temporarily reduce or shift energy use, keeping supply and demand in balance.

AI will also improve grid reliability by using advanced analytics to spot early warning signs in equipment like transformers and power lines — often weeks before something breaks. Problems will be fixed in advance, reducing outages and moving the grid closer to the end-goal: a self-repairing system.

How AI Will Revolutionize the Energy Grid: Hourly Matching

Generating renewable energy is just the first step — the bigger challenge is matching clean power with demand, in real time. In 2026, renewable offsets will be replaced with a more ambitious goal: 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy (CFE).

With AI-based monitoring, organizations can align electricity use with clean energy generation on an hourly basis. This means a data center running overnight is powered by actual wind or stored renewable energy, rather than being “offset” by solar credits produced during the day.

This shift will drive the adoption of “granular certificates,” which track electricity generation and consumption at fine time intervals (hourly or even sub-hourly) instead of annually. These certificates will make it possible to verify carbon-free energy use and improve the accuracy and credibility of energy and emissions accounting.

Is AI Energy-use and Pollution Worth the Gains?

HOW DO WE REGULATE AGAINST WASTE?

In Ireland, datacenters guzzle 20% of the country’s electricity, while xAI’s Colossus datacenter is spewing more methane than a large power plant.

Meanwhile, xAI’s Grok is generating images of Nazi Mickey Mouse, ChatGPT promotes conspiracies, Google has forced AI results into every search, and Microsoft has embedded Copilot so deeply, you're using AI whether you want to or not.

Considering how resource intensive these machines are, should they be used to find take-out food or create AI slop?

WHAT IF AI COULD COMPENSATE BY REDUCING EMISSIONS IN OTHER PARTS OF THE ECONOMY?

Spain’s Iberdrola says AI has optimized wind turbine maintenance and France’s Engie says it has reduced downtime on solar farms by using AI to detect faults. We could use AI for good – to track deforestation or optimize energy use... but right now we’re mostly using coal-powered datacenters to create clickbait.

Is Climate Adaptation Becoming a Strategic Imperative?

In 2024, storms, rising sea levels, droughts, and forest fires cost the global economy $328 billion, a 6% increase from the previous year. Natural catastrophes are creating uninsurable areas worldwide, driving up costs and risk exposure.

Food supply chains are a flashpoint, with coffee, soy, cocoa, maize, rice, and wheat particularly vulnerable.

Coffee prices increased by 40% in 2024, though retail prices rose only 5%, a gap that will close. Cocoa prices have risen 400% in recent years, as climate-driven heatwaves in West Africa become more frequent. In 2026, any of these crops could experience severe price shocks, triggering cascading effects.

Adaptation is vital to safeguard resources, protect infrastructure, and maintain affordability. The solutions will often be nature-based, requiring ecosystem restoration, water management, and biodiversity protection.

Good News 2025!

THE ‘WATER GUARDIANS’ FIGHTING THE DESERTIFICATION OF HUNGARY

The southern Hungarian plain, once an important site for agriculture, has become increasingly dry.

In previous centuries the region was regularly flooded by the Danube and Tisza Rivers. Now, volunteers are trying to save the region from total desiccation by using overflow water from a local thermal spa to flood the fields — mimicking the natural cycle of flooding that channelizing the great rivers ended.

This should raise the groundwater level and create a microclimate through surface evaporation that could increase humidity, reduce temperatures and dust and have a positive impact on nearby vegetation.

Flooding led to a Climate Adaptation Success Story!

RECORD FLOODING SUBMERGED BOR IN SOUTH SUDAN IN 2020, THE EMERGENCY RESPONSE TRANSFORMED THE TOWN

The people of Bor used to fetch water from a filthy stretch of the White Nile; which left the community hugely vulnerable to waterborne diseases. In 2020, Bor was submerged when the White Nile broke its banks. This resulted in a strategic shift to finding long-term, durable solutions to the water supply:

• Dykes were built and drainage systems established for rainwater.
• An existing treatment plant was overhauled to be “climate-resilient” — built on raised ground, it runs on solar power, minimizing running costs and carbon emissions.

The project has brought jobs, reduced water costs and improved school attendance.

Exciting Developments in Carbon Capture Technology

Both the University of Houston and MIT researchers have unveiled breakthroughs in carbon capture technologies this year. These included a membraneless electrochemical process that achieves over 90% carbon removal at approximately $70 per metric ton, and a nanofiltration membrane, which makes carbon capture six times more efficient and 30% cheaper.

The WEF believe carbon capture could open up new markets and provide climate benefits – if given strong public sector support and clear demand signals. However, currently investment is low.

It’s worth noting that the world reached peak gas car sales in 2017 — as such, US car manufacturers are in danger of being left behind.

SALES IN EUROPE SURGE, WHILE US SALES STALL

Electric vehicle sales are up 21% globally compared to 2024. China leads the way, while Europe comes in second.

EV sales in the US have not seen the same robust growth as China and Europe, following the expiration of US EV tax credits.

Worldwide, EV demand continues to grow, but policy support — or the lack thereof — is increasingly shaping where this growth occurs.
