Today marks the 12 year anniversary of my first credited contribution to the @wordpress.org project. To celebrate, I'm excited to finally share my involvement in a project that began during Maintainers Month in May to celebrate maintainers in Open Source.

Once something is committed and released in @wordpress.org Core, it comes with an implicit promise of backward compatibility for the foreseeable future. But it’s not clear what to do when a feature becomes outdated, unused, or deprioritized.

The @wordpress.org community has done such a great job educating site owners about keeping PHP up to date. But historically, the same has not been true when it comes to the database software every WordPress site relies on.
