Is it a metaphor for addiction? Is it about populist politics? Is it about the climate crisis? It is about a woman? I’m honestly not sure. I’m sure it will reveal itself over time. 2/3

No Tomorrow, the third song on my album, is about … well I’m not really sure! This one took on a life of its own. It is sort of about loving the thing that destroys you. 1/3

I did a good thing today. I released an album. This is my first. I’m 55. I’ve wanted to do this since I was 10. This is a good day.

The Sycamore Gap Trea is known to many (especially Americans) as the 'Robin Hood tree' due to its appearance in the film.

In order to keep with the 80s synth-pop feel, I changed the chorus to be less catchy than it originally started out 😂 3/4

It is a fairly cynical song. Without being too overt, there is an implication here of cognitive dissonance: we can be (rightly) appalled by this crime whilst being, at the same time, in some way complicit in broader climate destruction. 2/4

Never Just A Tree, the second song on my album, is melancholy 80s 'British' synth-pop. It's a requiem for the iconic Sycamore Gap Tree - a famous landmark tree in Northern England, that was mindlessly felled by two men during a storm in 2023. 1/4

It combines three elements: Tennyson’s defence of simple moral worth over social rank; ideas from a video that @fryrsquared published on how to raise your baseline level of happiness; and a description of an average Monday in the Hopper household (I know it’s Monday, because that’s recycling day).

Oh What A Day! The first song on my album is pop, painted in primary colours. It’s the most positive song on the album. My son said that too many of my songs sounded “catchy but with miserable lyrics” - so this was an attempt to readdress the balance! Thanks to Tennyson for help with the lyrics.

When I stopped working in May 2024, colleagues and friends asked repeatedly whether I was going to do some other work.

My answers were consistent: “I am not planning to work for a living, but I will probably make music”.

Today I changed my LinkedIn profile from “retired” to “singer/songwriter”!!

My album was self-produced from start to finish. As such, it is full of the flaws and imperfections that come with being an amateur. But these are no more different to the flaws and imperfections I see every morning in the mirror - they are an honest reflection.

Just launched the third and final single from my forthcoming album. Two new songs including a love letter to Northumberland and a sensual, sleepy setting of an Arthur Symons poem. I hope people will give a listen and enjoy.
