Dr. King, from "Where Do We Go from Here?"

Love is ultimately the only answer to [our] problems. And I’m going to talk about it everywhere I go.... And I’m not talking about emotional bosh when I talk about love; I’m talking about a strong, demanding love. For I have seen too much hate.

I’m on a bit of a Simenon Maigret kick these days—older English editions preferred. Today’s find is particularly luscious.

St. Benedict writes in his Rule that the abbot should say the Lord's Prayer aloud at Compline so that the monks will hear "Forgive us as we forgive others" and will reconcile with anyone as necessary before sundown.

More a ditty than a poem:

"Priorities"

Does it say somewhere
Didn't someone
How can it not be
Was it John or Peter or Mary
said hold on
wait a minute Jesus
while I jot that down?

I'm sitting at JFK waiting for a connecting flight home. Right across from me is a guy davenning wrapped in tefillin, and two women in full burkas just stopped to sit, holding the hands of their children. Beautiful, all.

Thomas Hardy died on this day in 1928. They removed his heart and buried it in his dead wife's crypt before cremating the rest of his body. How romantic!

I’ll always remember visiting my daughter’s 2nd grade chess class and seeing her coach give a lesson. “Chase that rook with your pawn! This is just like life! Be courageous!” It was fabulous.
