For most of her career at the New York City Ballet she was the only African-American ballerina. Aesha retired from ballet in 2008 and started the Swan Dreams Project, a project that encourages African-American girls to become ballet dancers.

Most People Would Rather Die Than Think—In Fact, They Do.

Full Quote: "We all have a tendency to think that the world must conform to our prejudices. The opposite view involves some effort of thought, and most people would die sooner than think—in fact, they do so."

Bertrand Russell, 1925.

“One of the saddest lessons of history: If we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle…

It's simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we've been taken…

Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.”

- Carl Sagan
"One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We're no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It's simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we've been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back."

This megatherium depiction always stuck with me too.

It reminds me of an anecdote Carl Sagan tells where he takes his son to the American Museum of Natural History and they reach the giant ground sloth, megatherium and his kid asks.

“Is that God?”

This pic is from a paleontology book that came out in the early 1980s. I had it when I was a little boy in NH.

I remember seeing this woman and thinking thats who I wanna be when I grow up. She gets to study dinosaurs!!

Just found a copy of the book at the museum and it feels surreal.

We win! 🦖💖🦕

“The aim of Judith Butler’s ‘Who’s Afraid of Gender? (2024) is not to offer a new theory of gender but to examine how “gender” has become a phantasm for emerging authoritarian regimes, fascist formations, religious groups and trans-exclusionary feminists.”

Who’s Afraid of Gender (2024) discusses the conservative movement against transgender rights, abortion and feminism, which is coalesced under the "anti-gender movement".

Butler argues that the moment calls for solidarity between persecuted groups and a coalition of resistance.

"Hard times are coming, when we'll be wanting the voices of writers who can see alternatives to how we live now, can see through our fear-stricken society and its obsessive technologies to other ways of being, and even imagine real grounds for hope..."
