Think vacuoles are just plant cell dumpsters? Think again.
They sense. They signal. They reshape. They fight back! ⚔️

Vacuoles are emerging as central hubs for plant resilience and adaptation. 🌱

@plantophagy.bsky.social and I unpack it all in our new review. Check it out!

Absolutely! Anthocyanins just prove vacuoles have both flair and function.

🌱 Thrilled to share that our latest research on Vacuolar Quality Control is now published in Nature Plants! 🚀 We uncovered a new mechanism of ATG8ylation of the tonoplast, which helps us understand how cells survive to cell wall damage.

ATG8ylation of the tonoplast, triggered by cell wall damage, acts as a vital vacuolar quality control mechanism that safeguards vacuolar integrity and ensures cell survival under stress.

Science is never a solo journey! 🌿🔬✨

A huge thank you to my amazing lab members, collaborators, and my mentor @plantophagy.bsky.social for their support and insights throughout this project. 🙌

Grateful for this community pushing boundaries and excited for what’s next! 🚀

For the first time in plants, we used APEX-based electron microscopy to map the precise localization of ATG8 at the vacuolar membrane after stress! 🚀

Pushing the boundaries of plant cell biology—one EM image at a time. ⚡👀

We found that the key autophagy protein ATG8 gets conjugated to the vacuolar membrane (tonoplast), acting as a safeguard for vacuolar integrity—and, by extension, cellular survival. 🛡️

This is the first evidence of a vacuolar quality control (VQC) mechanism! Check out the figure below. 👇

New paper alert! The Dagdas group @plantophagy.bsky.social discovered that the molecule ATG8 protects the vacuole when the cell wall is damaged. This mechanism ensures that the highly pressured vacuole, essential to the plant cell, remains intact. Read more: bit.ly/4aLCZK9
