This is the lineup I expect the Wizards to open with tonight: Bub Carrington, CJ McCollum, Kyshawn George, Khris Middleton and Alex Sarr.

That's my guess — but not a risky guess. The team typically doesn't announce its lineup until 30 minutes remain before the national anthem.

The Milwaukee Bucks will welcome back Khris Middleton tonight, with tonight being his first game back since his trade-deadline deal to Washington last winter. This is on many of the TV screens on the Fiserv Forum main concourse.

Rookie Will Riley is expected to be on the active list for tonight's Washington Wizards season opener in Milwaukee, coach Brian Keefe said after the team's shootaround today. Riley is listed as questionable on the team's injury report because of a sprained right ankle.

For the Washington Wizards, the 2025-26 season is likely to get ugly. Again. This is Year 3 of their rebuild, with no end date in sight. But the biggest mistake the franchise could make now is deviating from its plan too soon. My column, for @theathletic.com:

Bilal Coulibaly, who has been sidelined throughout camp and the preseason as he recovers from thumb-ligament surgery, will not be available to play in Wednesday's season opener, coach Brian Keefe said. AJ Johnson (bruise) has been cleared to play, Keefe said.

You may have noticed that Cam Whitmore is watching tonight's game in street clothes on the Wizards' bench. He tweaked an ankle in the Knicks preseason game and is being held out just to make sure he doesn't aggravate it. He probably would play if this was a regular-season game.
