Een Palestijn, vluchteling en activist, pleegde zelfdoding in het gesloten centrum 127bis. Voor collega-activisten is zijn dood het gevolg van ‘toegenomen repressie’. De vraag is of zijn dood niet vooral iets zegt over psychiatrische zorg voor mensen die uitgeprocedeerd zijn.

✅ maar:
"In het detentiecentrum worden mensen opgesloten om administratieve redenen. De overheid probeert hen uit te wijzen naar een ander land."

Zo'n administratief detentiecentrum is duur, traumatiserend en zorgt niet eens voor hogere terugkeercijfers.

Het is kostelijke symboolpolitiek die echte mensen echt schaadt. Hoe oud of nieuw het gebouw ook is.

Clear establishment of containment policies. Also moving towards criminalisation and detention. To name a few other "initiatives":
❌Allowing home searches to arrest undocumented persons
❌Extending immigration detention to 18 months
❌Doubling detention capacity
