In May 2025, The Telegraph joined our field mission on virus surveillance work in #Cambodia, where we used novel, non-invasive techniques like air sampling in live bird markets and bat caves, paired with field-deployable tools, to detect #emergingviruses at the source.

Cambodia has confirmed its 9th and 10th human cases of H5N1 bird flu this year. 6 of these cases occurred in June alone. Sadly, 6 people have died in 2025. 🧪🧬🦠🔬🥼😷🐓💉

Our findings emphasize the need for interdisciplinary approaches to zoonotic disease surveillance, integrating virology, ecology, and public health. SCCV adds to the growing list of coltiviruses with potential public health implications. #OneHealth #GlobalHealth #Virology

Could bat ectoparasites serve as a vector and/or reservoir of zoonotic viruses?
#OneHealth
With increasing human-wildlife contact in biodiverse regions, understanding viral diversity in ectoparasites like bat bugs is crucial for preventing spillovers.

SCCV is closely related to Tai Forest Reovirus (TFRV), previously found in African bats found in 18.4% of bat bugs collected from cave-dwelling bats.

SCCV was successfully isolated in several mammalian cell lines, showing potential to infect vertebrate hosts.

In a new study, using #metagenomics we discovered a novel Coltivirus, named Stricticimex coltivirus (SCCV), in a newly identified bat bug species in #Cambodia (Stricticimex phnomsampovensis) #OneHealth

Cambodia reports second fatal human #H5N1 case in 2025 in a 2 y/o child from Prey Veng province on Feb 25. Exposure to sick and dead chickens near his home.

#Avian #influenza remains a serious threat. Strengthening #OneHealth surveillance and response is critical. #BirdFlu
