Lastly (for now) we were able to externally validate these algorithms using data from the CPRD Gold database in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. This helps generate the highest grade research evidence to support implementation into practice.

the new canPredict-ED algorithms will supersede the widely used qcancer.org tools to help drive improvements in early diagnosis of cancer - an area where the UK has massive scope for improvement.

this fourth graph shows how well the prediction model discriminates between risk of different types of cancer. We were able to include 15 types of cancer in our analysis due to the excellent linkage with the cancer registry.

This third graph shows how cancer risk varies by age, body mass index and haemoglobin levels, using routinely collected NHS data. there is huge clinical value for patient care through research using anonymised data from GPs so our thanks to the many GPs who share data

and the humble white cell and platelet counts (again done many millions of time each year in UK general practice) also show important associations with risk of an existing cancer

this graph from our latest paper in Nature Comms shows how risk of cancer varies with levels of commonly used liver function tests. Its particularly valuable addition to the cancer prediction algorithms given the huge number of these blood tests every year

The #research used the anonymised electronic health records of 7.4 million adults in England plus the results of 7 routine blood tests to create the new algorithms which could revolutionise how cancer is detected in primary care, and make it easier for patients to get treatment at earlier stages.

The NHS currently uses prediction #algorithms, such as the QCancer scores, to combine relevant information from patient data and identify individuals deemed at high risk of having a currently undiagnosed cancer, enabling GPs and specialists to call them in for further testing.

Researchers from @qmul.ac.uk and the @ox.ac.uk have created 2 new advanced predictive algorithms which use health data and routine blood tests to accurately predict a patient’s chances of having a currently undiagnosed #cancer, including hard to diagnose liver and oral cancers.

Please do think of joining us or pass this on to someone you know who might fancy it. I am, of course, rather biased but I think we are a lovely bunch, trying to help answer some really important questions. Always happy to chat to anyone who is interested!

New research shows a worrying trend: not all clinically vulnerable patients are getting equal access to Sotrovimab, a COVID-19 treatment, despite it being safe to use.

@juliahcox.bsky.social and colleagues raise serious concerns about health inequalities.

New research shows concerning disparities in how Sotrovimab - a COVID-19 treatment approved for extremely clinically vulnerable patients - is given to patients, despite it being safe.
