“I’m a happy designer when…” is a series of reflections on my work. I’d like to share the small wins, good feelings, accidental victories, and micro accomplishments that epitomize my job at its best.

yeah so I have one of these, one third gen, and… a dozen Nest Protects that I installed in 2016. Fire alarms are required to expire after 10 years and I failed to buy replacement Protects a few years ago when they stopped making them.

not just their safety — I buy the argument that they fear for their “legitimacy” in that they worry about issuing too many rulings the executive clearly ignores.

they’d rather be seen as in the bag for this particular executive than completely irrelevant, and see those as the only two options.

Here's the unlikely century-long story of how a non-gendered pronoun became gendered, and then got itself re-de-gendered.

This one's got everything! Poetry! Grammar! Love songs! Queer communities! Unicode! and ... Y.R. Chao!

What more could you want?

yeah they cling to this illusion of moderate voters who will change their minds if only they were coddled slightly more

it’s so frustrating how few people in the democratic party are willing to stand up like this. it shouldn’t feel so rare that we have to rely on Newsom for this.

I just received a Silver Alert. Blasting on many devices in my house, as they do — I thought it was an earthquake alert.

But it’s from my city and clearly not as urgent as duck-and-cover.

It contains a bit.ly link to an x.com tweet that I’m not allowed to see. This is fine.

For promoting my apps, I try to use actual pictures of real devices, in the real-world, as much as possible.

3D renders are nice, but there's something nice about authentic shots - especially for camera apps! (featured here: 65x24.app)

The trickiest part is avoiding reflections 😅

@kevinmullin.house.gov @padilla.senate.gov @schiff.senate.gov please consider. Much of this dismantling of the federal government has been illegal, and simply having judges say as much is not enough.
I actually think the dems should attend the SOTU, wait till the 2nd sentence, and then walk out en masse, that'll do it, there'll be no address, he'll just have a meltdown on national Tv

I’m a happy designer when we can turn a video game mechanic into an interactive user interface element — self-explanatory, communicative of system state, but also fun to fiddle with.

it’s why I still use my Leica TL2. I enjoy the object so much, and the shots are beautiful when I get them.

glad this Sigma is also L-mount. But I think the smaller lenses with L-mount APS-C were fine, I don’t know that everything has to be full-frame. oh well

fwiw I remember finding it pretty gross at the time.

I heard rumblings about the kind of person he was in 2014/2015, but heard more direct accounts by 2016 that made me grossed out by him.

cognitive dissonance is very human. we’re also bad at all sorts of things in statistics and economics — there are fun studies where experts go entirely against the math when presented with politically or emotionally coded choices. some things just run counter to how our brains want them to work.
