Right, the people upset now about the administration bailing out Israel and Argentina with their taxpayer dollars should know that their taxpayer dollars were used to finance murderous right wing dictatorships in Latin America in the 70s and 80s (and beyond in Chile).

And all of his and his family's ilegally obtained assets seized.

I lived in Argentina for 4 years. I learned to love the people and some aspects of the culture. I traveled around the country and met people from various regions. I have only seen this stereotype of superiority prevalent in Buenos Aires which is 1/4 of the country's total population.
juliben.bsky.social
Agreed. I've been so out of touch and I just read of the case of Enzo Fernandez and learned of an infamous song. All elements are racist and homophobic in nature. They probably thought they weren't doing anything wrong but trying to touch a nerve. It sadly reflects the ignorance of Argentine society
juliben.bsky.social
If you look at other countries, racist chants in football are far too common in Europe and South America. In Spain I remember Brazilian players being called monkeys. In Italy, teams like Lazio are well known as fascist. The UK is no exception. Football is a tainted sport led by a corrupt Federation.
juliben.bsky.social
Nevertheless, this is why I stopped following football altogether. It brings the worst out of people, myself included. At one point I saw myself chanting against people of countries like Bolivia and Paraguay and that is not who I want to be nor who I want my son to see me as. So I stopped.

This ignores the fact that most players were born in France and Netherlands. However, I do remember hearing that Dutch players were as much or worse asses and that the French already were boasting about being champions prior to the game. All the other games went on without issues.
juliben.bsky.social
Not to justify but there is a misguided notion in all of South America and parts of Europe that French and Dutch players of African and Caribbean descent were brought in and nationalized to gain a competitive advantage. While many are probably racists, most were chanting against the FFF.

Taking a break from my usual posts to share some happier thoughts. Just planted 18 new native perennials and shrubs with my (almost) 3 year old who loves making the Earth beautiful with his dad.

This included 3 that are a threatened species in PA. Here's to hoping that they all thrive!

I'm sorry to hear that and I hope that it doesn't come to that here in the US. Unfortunately it does not look promising. We shall persevere.

Hope that you have a good night and that you learn to be more tolerant. It's not a good luck to spew hate and then act like you're left-leaning or a liberal. It's kinda hypocritical actually.

Nice try ... now add a tinfoil conspiracy theory hat to your description

Hipólito Yrigoyen and Arturo Illia were two promising Presidents who promoted economic and social development. They both were sacked by a military coup. Perón was involved in the coup that ousted Yrigoyen, led to the infamous decade, and then stole the credit from many of Yrigoyen's policies.
juliben.bsky.social
Yes, and they also voted for Peronists in the past who they thought would be different. It's been a while since they had a popular candidate who could lead. But even when they got one or two, they all got ousted by US and UK backed military coups. It's never going to get better for them.

You think the bailout is going to the people of Argentina? You must be naive on top of being pathetic.

"The bad outweighs the good" ... judging a whole nation over a football tournament without knowing even a bit of the history.
juliben.bsky.social
You want to alienate people because you don't like how a few celebrated winning a tournament.

Meanwhile, I have Argentine friends legally living in the US being detained by ICE. Some of them LGBTQIA+. Some in Argentina going through rough times due to constant US intervention.

You are pathetic.

Eso está mas que claro. Supongo que algún campo de golf en el sur o un rascacielos en Puerto Madero. Quizá mas.
juliben.bsky.social
Just like the Brits and Americans whenever they win anything. If it were for people like you both, I would just assume the US got what they deserved in 2016 a d 2024. Thankfully, I know better.

Spoken like a true uneducated ethnocentrist. Board a plane once in a while and meet other people instead of seeking education through sports events.

My grandfather during Peron's unofficial dictatorship. Then my mother's cousin during the Junta for freaking out and forgetting that he had his documents. All of that financed by the US and the UK.
juliben.bsky.social
Read about the country's history. The US and the UK have intervened in their elections since Yrigoyen. That country has been ravaged by foreign interests for almost a century. They do deserve better but let them at least enjoy a World Cup. It's the best thing that will ever happen to them.
juliben.bsky.social
The Argentines know very well but I'm sure they'll rake whatever they can get after being sacked for 5 decades by politicians and the foreign interests of the US and the UK.
juliben.bsky.social
El país está fundido desde hace mas de 5 décadas. Milei es otro decerebrado de los tantos que elige el pueblo argentino. No van a salir nunca del fondo.
juliben.bsky.social
You put an image of Pinochet but Argentina had its own fair share of US/UK financed fascist dictatorships. Probably more than Chile but none lasted as long as Pinochet.
juliben.bsky.social
The only time the currency stabilized was under Menem when the Peronists tried to peg the peso to the dollar in the 90's at the expense of public services and the overall economy. Any time the country went through a period of relative sustainable development a US/UK financed Coup took over.
