leftover croissants = ham + gruyère strata for breakfast the next day

this is slightly better than Zombie’s previous entry if only for the bold swings and imagination he brings to the table. the hospital stuff near the beginning, though? 😮‍💨 all-timer stuff. sometimes i’ll just rewatch that whole sequence and wish i had a feature length version.

spooky movie night with the parents! mom said “that was really good!” and dad said “it was fun”

me: why don’t i feel very good today?

also me: i’ve had 4 hours of sleep every night this week and also just realized i haven’t eaten anything since my bowl of soup yesterday at 5pm

i will say, the ending fucking rips though ✌🏼

i actually like Rob Zombie’s singular voice and aesthetic — his big three (House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil’s Rejects, and The Lords of Salem) are all fantastic… but it just doesn’t work great here. i like the brutality but something always feels off. McDowell is great as Loomis.

my parents are visiting this weekend so i’ve been busy baking them some treats (here, snickerdoodles, s’mores cookies, and brown butter toffee chocolate cookies)

Roman Polanski is one of the biggest pieces of shit to ever work behind the camera, but i’m so sorry you’d have to pry this film and Rosemary’s Baby from my cold, dead hands. genuine masterpieces, both just straight-up faultless and endlessly fascinating.

it is the best thing in the entire world

BIG DAY FOR JUSTIN (i made my favorite soup). the amount of flavor packed into this little bowl of corn chowder… 😮‍💨

forgot to post these over the weekend but i watched more Frankensteins 🤗

i simply don’t have the patience for the eurotrash ’70s sleaze of Flesh for Frankenstein. i guess you could generously call it “camp.”

meanwhile Young Frankenstein remains a perfect movie.

will i survive the next 120 hours? too soon to call.

i wasn’t expecting to add a Halloween franchise rewatch to the month, but damn it i just felt inspired. this is the only one that just plain suuucks. there’s nothing good about it aside from *some* of the asylum vibes at the beginning (which is still mishandled). horrendous mask.

homemade salted apple cider caramels to feel something autumnal 🍂

i know it’s a fan favorite, but this one always strikes me as a bloodless Scream knockoff more than a proper Halloween entry — Kevin Williamson is alllll over it. that said, i still love it and JLC rules in it. i really like the short scene in the rest stop bathroom (spooky!!)

a masterpiece. smarter people than me have dissected it to death in the context of giallo/Argento’s previous work so i’ll just add that it’s one of my faves. one of those films you can watch academically or casually and enjoy either way.

also i have such a boner for John Saxon.

my entire apartment smells like cinnamon and apples (i’m boiling cider for apple cider caramels)

definitely more violent, and that same scene terrified me! and when Paul Rudd is trying to break out the lead actress from the institution room and Michael is right there. and all the surgeons being massacred. lots of scary moments!

another lunchtime Halloween treat. people seem to dislike this entry, but i will posit that the Curse of Thorn is intriguing and fun and there are some extremely effective moments in this that haunted me as a kid. Paul Rudd is honestly so good in it too — so nervous and weird.

i haven’t seen everything yet, but this is the current state of horror as i see it
