A 6.2 earthquake hit Istanbul this afternoon, thankfully no casualties reported so far. But:
1. Scenes of packed crowds in narrow streets all over the city highlight the lack of adequate assembly areas. 60% of assembly areas listed in the city's disaster plan no longer exist. Many were built upon.

As an agnostic person, I tend to feel little sympathy for religious leaders. The late Pope was an exception. An advocate of compassion in a world that is normalising plain cruelty, he will be sorely missed.
