karlyle_tommsREAD MORE: Those of us who are cat lovers know how kitties can get at Christmas. Back in the late 1980s, I had a cat named Bonkers.I should have known better than to name her that because she lived up to the name. After putting up my Christmas tree one particular year, I awoke in the middle of the night to sounds from my living room. I thought someone must have broken in. So, I grabbed the ball bat I kept by my bed and snuck carefully toward the sound. I peeked around from the hall ready to pounce on whoever might be in my living room, and there was Bonkers with a beed garland in her mouth. She had pulled the garland half way across the living room and was backing up, tugging it further with each backward lunge. The tree was leaning toward her and about to fall over. I intervened just in time. After that, I began hanging bell ornaments on my tree, a kitty cat alarm system, and I still do that to this day. Even though I have never had a cat quite like Bonkers, I still make sure I have my jingling kitty alarm on every tree. I put the tree up today. It’s much smaller than the one I had in Missouri where I had a Victorian farm house with 11 foot ceilings. I had an 8 and 1/2 foot tree with a four foot diameter base. However, in Texas, especially on the coast, you pay more for less and I don’t have the space I used to have. So, now, I have a “pencil tree.” It’s seven feet tall, but the base is only 21 inches. It used to take me 12-16 hours to put up the tree in Missouri, but today I did it in four hours. Nonetheless, my pencil tree is heavy with ornaments, and I love it, even though some Aleive is called for.Today was a wonderful day. It’s cloudy, but 77 degrees here, and I love that, too. Tomorrow, it drops into the 50s, but still, I’m loving the warmth. My current batch of cats don’t bother the tree much, but I still have my kitty alarm.
