at least in my circle and in vietnam specifically people know and have read like.. les mis, wuthering heights, HP, pippi longstocking.. etc

from my experience it’s a mix of both! lots of US and UK books are translated (and i’d say in the past 15-20 years ago many countries import the books in their original language) but there are many local books that are popular locally but don’t get translated

yaaaa tho jokes on me bc i was the only one that aligned with the low magic rule and everyone else in the party just has magic anyway LMFAOHFKFJFKFJ but turns out we needed melee so it has been working out fine. we def need a healer / tank tho KCDKCJCK and yes!! we actually have a session coming up

but then it exploded mysteriously which killed the mentor and left arvis with a huge burn.. so far our campaign is about solving a succession mystery in a faraway town so all this backstory is just flavor on my end LMFAOHXKXJ

but i haven’t gotten a chance to rp it out yet LCDKFJK but backstory wise he has a mentor who took care of him and the hospital bills but bc it’s low magic there weren’t a lot of potions around.. one day his mentor came across a magical tome (c illegal) and tried using spells to heal arvis

and oh!! my dnd char is arvis — he’s a rogue in a low magic setting! he kinda has a penchant for violence but is physically quite weak so he’s sneaky about the stabby. in the backstory technically he gets pain every time he does anything

but it’s still frustrating and horrifying all the same. loveee the fairy tale quality of the description and dialogue. i wish the audiobook narrator didn’t do the russian accent for every single fuckin dialogue tho. why. i wish morozko was in it more but i also understand why he wasn’t

probably one of my favorite reads recently - love the retelling of vasilisa the beautiful and the focus more on the history of vasilisa family. i really love the way how all the villains are fleshed out too and like.. you see why they do things..

a fun YA read!! i really enjoy all of the characters. i enjoy the main couple and love the concept of goddaughter of death and fortune. actually didn’t realize it was a retelling of a fairy tale until i looked it up??
