Hello BlueSky! I’m Kata, a postdoc fascinated by #bats and their ultrasonic world 🦇🌌 My research in the LIFEPLAN project focuses on decoding their calls to reveal hidden #biodiversity patterns and advance #conservation. Excited to share more about bats and what their #echolocation calls can reveal!

Bat census 2025 at Salpalinja! 🦇❄️

Super cool & sunny weekend monitoring hibernating bats in the bunkers of Salpalinja. We checked more sites than ever — and found 424 bats! 78% of the bunkers had bats, with the badass northern bat dominating. Huge thanks to @nathist.bsky.social for organizing this!

Usein sanotaan, että negatiiviset asenteet susia kohtaan olisivat automaattinen osa ihmisten ja susien yhteistä historiaa. Tuore väitöstutkimus esittää, että etenkin eliittiin kuuluneet metsästäjät loivat aktiivisesti negatiivista kuvaa susista 1900-luvun vaihteessa. www.helsinki.fi/fi/uutiset/h...
Väitös: Sudet kuuluvat Suomen luontoon | Helsingin yliopisto
Susiensuojelua ja luonnonsuojelua tulisi käsitellä poliittisesti osana laajempia yhteiskunnallisia rakenteita, todetaan väitöstutkimuksessa, jonka osana tehtiin ainutlaatuinen musiikkialbumi.

Fast vocal-motor tracking of escaping prey in echolocating bats - BMC Biology
Background Echolocating bats face an intense arms race with insect prey that can detect bat calls and initiate evasive maneuvers. Their high closing speeds and short biosonar ranges leave bats with on...

#Urbanization changes also our boreal landscapes—but how does it affect #bats? 🦇 Thrilled to share part of my PhD research that highlights the importance of old forests for bats and the challenges land-use changes create. Curious? Read it in Landscape Ecology: tinyurl.com/batsinboreal 🦇🌲<3

On this shortest, darkest day of the year, I’m throwing it back to a Nordic summer night with this amazing northern bat (Eptesicus nilssonii). Adapted to hunt under bright skies, these little legends never fail to amaze me! <3
