Loess Hills in western Iowa contain the largest remaining swathes of prairie in Iowa. Native prairie grasses have deep roots that can reach down deep for water when it's hot and dry, and stay insulated in the freezing winter.

This painting is one of a series I created a few years ago to celebrate the beauty and history of the Loess Hills Natl Scenic Byway. The rain that fell on the plains filtered through the loess and, over millennia, created limestone. Isn't that beautiful?

Saw any good art lately?

Inspiration really can come from anywhere. In this case, it was an old crosscut saw left out in the rain years ago.

What was the last found object that inspired you?

I'll have this and several other Halloween-themed pieces on display next week at #HoffFourthFriday.
