Pritzker: "It's unconscionable. This has never happened before. They're calling out troops onto the streets of a state that doesn't want them and they're not even telling us where they're gonna go, what they're gonna do. This hasn't happened I don't think since the Civil War."

Grijalva: The frustration for me is that it seems as if Speaker Johnson is not willing to swear me in because our politics are a little different, or because I’m going to be the 218th signer—he can just continue to drag this along with no end in sight.

That is not a foundation of our democracy.

Remember that new study?

Yeah we been knowing. 96% of BLM protests were peaceful; same for 99% of the pro-Palestine protests…

And while I saw lots of reports on the study, I can’t say the same for the bigger news:

That Trump scraped the study from all government websites — like it never existed!
US justice department removes study finding far-right extremists commit ‘far more’ violence
Report finding rightwing extremists have killed more Americans than other domestic terrorist groups vanished from DoJ website

Sounds like what the Nazis did to the Jews. 6 million Jews "dropped off the grid" after being taken into custody.

Mary Trump on Charlie Kirk:
Charlie Kirk on “free speech”: apparently it only applies when people agree with him. Mary Trump’s take? Imagine someone defending freedom by trying to silence everyone else.

Yes it’s a scary time, but the momentum is shifting. If people like Karl Rove, Tucker Carlson, and John Yoo are defending free speech or criticizing his extreme powers, then we do have momentum and the power to fight back. Americans keep going and use your voice!

The US is in the grip of an irrational frenzy, reminiscent of the McCarthyism that swept through American society in the 1950s. The US could have resolved this visa issue diplomatically by giving Korea advance notice as an ally.

korean reporting is nightmarish on the conditions Korean workers were contained in
Their waists and hands were tied together, forcing them to bend down and lick water to drink. The unscreened bathrooms contained only a single sheet to cover their lower bodies. Sunlight barely penetrated through a fist-sized hole, and they were only allowed access to the small yard for two hours. Detained by US immigration authorities for eight days, the workers and their families expressed shock, describing human rights violations and absurdities they could not have imagined as ordinary Koreans living in 2025.

The Spring 2025 print issue of Cold Mountain Review is now available at UNC Press.

Including stunning new work by Molly Peacock, Dorriane Laux, and Ron Smith, this issue of Cold Mountain Review also marks the passing of one of the journal’s founders, R.T. Smith.

At 68 years old, I've been told by my local pharmacy that NC is among 16 states where everyone has to get a prescription for the Covid vaccine. Notwithstanding the pandemic of 2020, this is where we are now.
