If Gato was surrounded by mentally well people who could convince him that what he does is self-destructive and just wrong, things could've been better for him.
Maybe if he valued his friendship with Karius and Kelley more, he could've avoid becoming Delaz's human shaped weapon.

He can't just leave Gato not does he want to. He understands that there's something wrong with Gato, but Gato is his superior officer and, again, there's power imbalance, he can't help his friend.
Probably, after the events of 0083 Karius realized how bad everything was and retired.

Kelley realizes how anti human Delaz's ideology (aka space flavored fascism) is and leaves them to defend his girlfriend and fight side by side with his new (less toxic) friend, Uraki.
Karius is in a trickier situation. While his friendship with Gato is somewhat healthy, there's power imbalance.

Delaz is poisoning all of them with his ideology. While Gato is definitely not mentally well and probably needs professional help, Kelley and Karius are pretty normal guys who participate in Delaz's madness mainly because of their proximity to Gato who wants to be Delaz's poster boy.

A weapon doesn't feel any human emotion, so in order to become one Gato has to get rid of his emotions.
Delaz is the only one here who doesn't have friends, family, lovers, etc, so basically nothing holds him back from descending into his fascist madness.

He lied to her and admitted it to Karius later. The most interesting thing about Gato is that he's not a psychopath. At least, it's not what he always was. He feels some sort of affection for Nina, Karius and Kelley, but pushes all of them away to become Delaz's human shaped weapon.

Not to steal attention from Bright, but something something Anavel Gato and how miserable his personal life is.
The same can be said about Haman too. In both cases, loneliness and rejection of their humanity kills them.

One thing that's irritating about the whole "Bright deadbeat dad" thing is that it obfuscates the far more interesting discussion of one of the themes of UC gundam, that is being a "important" and "great man" requires you to give up your human relationships

I'm quite familiar with this feeling as a 0083 fan. If I can't avoid bullshit takes on my favorite characters, I make fun of their absurdity. Like, yes, Nina is the worst person, worse than wannabe gihrens. It's easier when I don't take idiots seriously.
