I'm offering 3 AI workshops for academic parents (although if you're not an academic or a parent, you're welcome to attend too.) Advanced on Aug 15 and 20, "basic" on August 25. www.katypearce.net/ai-empowerme...
Dropbox doing a major update that requires a re sync of everything, right before a holiday, is not wise.

I don't cite newspapers often, so just out of curiosity I asked asked ChatGPT for the APA citation of this (I'll obv go to OWL Purdue). And I knew IMMEDIATELY it was wrong. OMG.

There is a lot of joy in reading undergraduate work where you can tell that they WANT to be a good writer and they really are trying. Giving feedback to help support them in expressing themselves better is realllllllly one of the best parts of my job.

For the past few years I've been encouraging undergrads to write for a "naive but interested" reader/viewer/listener.
I want them to explain what terms mean (and demonstrate that they understand) as well as develop skills in expressing ideas.

The 15th annual Communication & Technology / Mobile Doctoral Consortium is seeking volunteers to be mentors at #ICA26 in Cape Town. Faculty from all ranks are welcome. CAT/Mobile membership is not required, but faculty should be aligned. sites.google.com/view/2026ica...

I did what I thought was an interesting activity in my undergrad class yesterday. Students looked at packaging, manuals, press stuff for various home surveillance devices (cameras, meta glasses, toys, etc.). And they had to write up the "marketing" "appealing" phrases that mask privacy concerns.

For teaching - Annual Reviews has a public facing "magazine" that has some really good stuff! knowablemagazine.org
Knowable Magazine
Knowable Magazine explores the real-world significance of scholarly work through a journalistic lens. A digital magazine from Annual Reviews.

AI is very good at overstating research findings - quant and qual.
I see this. Would AI reviewing tools see it too?
I'm worried about the future.

When people have a baby, I buy them a packet of poster board, sort of as a joke. Like, one day, it will be 8:15pm and your kid will say they need a poster board for a project due tomorrow. And you'll have these and be glad.

A small reminder - when doing your #ICA26 reviews, please remember that ScholarOne TIMES OUT. So compose your review "offline" (in a document, notepad, etc.) and paste it into the fields. If you're typing in the fields on ScholarOne and it times out, there is a risk that your review will disappear.

I can't do screenshots easily on this, but if you are reviewing a #ICA26 pre-formed panel "Session Proposal" - you first click on the ID number and that will give you a pop up with the SESSION title, topic, and rationale.

Another #ICA26 reviewing tip. FYI: You MIGHT be reviewing pre-formed session proposals! But they aren't in the same place as regular papers.
This is the left side of the Reviewing screen and you'll need to click on Session Proposals.
In @icacat.bsky.social we email to warn people, but YMMV.

A little ScholarOne tip for #ICA26.
The review choices look like this initially:

My least favorite ScholarOne feature is that I pasted in my review, it "saved" but rejected it quietly, showed me this, making me THINK that it saved, but when I click on it again, it is empty. #ICA26

Will I be the oldest person at this show? Yes. Do I care? No.

I am so glad that I don't have to type my stuff on typewriters.

Students are starting the privacy module and the @taylorlorenz.bsky.social has a VERY relevant podcast episode drop today? Alas, I'll have to add it in next term.

Having kids 10 years apart gives me some interesting access to evolving norms. I'm very pleased to see the 5 Cs for media use being used now in the pediatric handouts.
Kudos to @sonialivingstone.bsky.social especially for pushing this forward.
