I duck, like I’m taking cover from a verbal shelling. I blast them with my best serious face and draw a finger to my lips, then stay down for a few seconds longer than necessary to collect my scattered thoughts. Enough is enough. If anything is going to happen with Kyle, I need to initiate it. Once I adjust my stature, I find his eyes across the group. The music is pounding and it’s getting hotter and more claustrophobic by the second. But there’s also a stillness, a steadiness watching him as strobe lights flash across his face. I swallow down and weave my way through the crowd until we’re toe-to-toe and I can wrap my hands around his neck, pressing my hips against his. Kyle’s cheek brushes mine as I lean in to whisper in his ear, confidence finally coursing through me, when a tray of freezing cold shots whooshes down my back.
