Brief intro while I’m new on Bluesky

I’m Keir. I’m an occupational therapist with (gulp) 25 years experience in mental health. That includes forensic, inpatient-acute and picu, assertive outreach, early intervention and Cmht.

I worked mainly in the NHS but struggled with how people who…

I’m very interested in people and helping them, just the labels don’t help.

Very few people at BIGSPD think the label is useful.

Once it’s gone BIGSPD can carry on thinking about those MH care struggles to help as it already does, just without that toxic label 😊

It’s a lazy answer but…I’m not that interested in the other PDs as no one ever diagnoses them. 25 years in MH and they’ve never been a part of my work.

BIGSPD had a vote on getting rid of the PD but a few years back. Lost by a tiny amount. It will go one day.

That will be interesting

It not a valid construct and if it was it’s applied appallingly.

We recognise it’s invalid and come up with different ways of describing distress. If nothing else I’d say those who “have BPD” that have survived severe abuse have different difficulties to those who have not.

And while I appreciate there might be a “how lucky we are that a man has explained his process on my thread” vibe to this reply, I’m very confident that I don’t do it “right”.

Where is the writing focused ? Is there a notebook? Many notebooks? Does the laptop live near the inspiration books?

I find myself scribbling in multiple books and adding notes to my phone then putting them into action anywhere until they’re allowed in the “finished” notebook.

I know a lot of people criticise psychiatry and I think that is often because it is the profession with the most power which can then be misused.

This example, that suggests objecting to survivors of abuse being told their personalities are disordered is a form of madness, is a prime example

Really worth a read around how a BPD diagnosis can be applied and what can help people.

Interestingly the “rich girl rehab” described here would be the “specialist” OOA placements in the uk which take from every demographic. 👇

A memorable guest post by Sorbie Richner on the experience and aftermath of residential psychiatric treatment when she was 20, and what she learnt about diagnoses, treatments, and recovery in the process.
