To survive colonial America’s social order, many abandoned their cultural roots. They embraced the manufactured hierarchy of “whiteness,” a system that, even today, continues to shape behaviors, including among some Black and other people of color. In other words…….. Sell-outs.

Before the 1800s, groups like the Irish, Italians, Jews, Slavs, and Greeks weren’t automatically considered white. Ethnicity, religion, and class determined acceptance within Anglo-Saxon Protestant society, which was dominated by the English and, at best, a few Dutch or German Protestants. 👇🏾📚🤓
